1. Seems like a bit of an overpayment to Carolina. A sign and trade of Freddie should get us the 1st. We can deal Johnsson separately if needed. No sign and trade it makes more sense.
2. WIlly I hate to see go, and yet not a bad trade. I dont like Ellis' age vs Willys, and i dont think we should give up on Dermott as well.
3. No need to sweeten any pot. Engvall makes 1.25/2. Easily trade-able and as proved in the playoffs, decent 4th line center.

NSH rejects but I think that’s the right direction - Replace Nylander with Marner and ask for a first back, minus the roster guys - and you’re more likely dealing in reality and on the path to winning now. Dubas screwed up with the Nylander deal and he massively overpaid both matthews and Marner; clearly was planning on extreme cap growth. Leafs fans need to face reality, in a flat cap world this team is royally f’d. Marner will have to be moved

Trading Freddie for Mrazak leaves Carolina with $7 million to spend on 7 roster slots, including signing Warren Foegele to a new contract. I doubt that the Hurricanes would want to take on Johnsson's $3.4 million cap hit, too. And the draft pick swap is a non-starter. Freddie isn't worth a first-rounder himself, and getting Mrazak on the way back reduces his value because Mrazak is at least a viable NHL goalie.

I think the best you can hope for from Carolina is Mrazak and a third for Andersen. I saw a very imaginative Andersen trade for two excellent defense prospects (Bean and Keane), but I don't think that Toronto is interested in another LD prospect.

Carolina isn't trading the 13th overall pick in this draft for Andersen, and Mrazak has positive, not negative, value.

Describe royally f'd? From what I see the Leafs need to move anywhere between 3-6 million from F to D that's it and the amount they need to move depends on the quality of D available - they could for instance move Johnsson for a song and sign Demelo at 3.5 to run a Rielly Demelo, Muzzin Holl, Dermott Lehtonen with Sandin and Liljegren itching for a call up

Is mrazek a viable option? Certainly not for a playoff team.

I’m still scratching my head over that Ellis trade.

This Offence is hot garbage.

Resulting in fielding two completely useless forward lines that will give them zero chance 5v5 for 30-40% of a game? I just don’t understand how leafs fans expect to win with half of a team that is basically unserviceable in the nhl.... that is not the model of the teams currently pushing for a cup

Just so we're both clear, by "Mrazak is at least a viable NHL goalie" I meant he'd be a perfectly good backup for someone first-class. I was trying to say that if Andersen = draft pick, then Andersen = Mrazak plus lower draft pick.

The problem I have with the Nylander trade in the other thread you and I have been discussing is that Toronto shouldn't be trading Nylander for a third-pairing defenseman, no matter what else (within reason) is coming back; improving the RD is the whole point of trading him. This is much better, but why should Toronto be the team adding something(s)?

Good question. The Preds get the younger player who can player either side or in the middle. I think if they are to move nylander (they won’t) for an older player (more than 4 or 5yrs older) or one with far less term, they would look to get a prospect back.

Pleasure doing business with you. Don’t really need him but going 4th to 2nd round is well worth it.
