Dumba does not get you Nylander. Dumba stagnated in his development while Nylander is still on the rise. Dumba isn't going to get you as much as you hope.

Agreed, Dumba makes no sense for the leafs, given that we don't need another offensive defenceman

Trades:
Dumba
Brodin
Subban
Hamonic UFA
Brodie UFA (also shoots left, plays right like Hainsey did) ...which might be interesting
Petro - too expensive UFA
Tanev - UFA
Shultz - UFA Jake Gardiner 2.0
Gudas - not as a top pair...
Shattenkirk - probably wont come to TO
Bogosian - past the Best Before date...

Okay I am getting so tired of people saying we need a "defensive defenceman", those don't really exist anymore. What you want is a two way player with physicality. Like Muzzin, having some big brute that just stands in front of his net and blocks shots because he doesn't have skating ability or puck skills to move the puck doesn't help. Look at the best defenceman in the league and they are two way guys. The Leafs need that. Slavin is a terrific two way player, Hedmen, Doughty, Rielly even (although he never gets credit). With the speed, skill and system TO plays we need defenceman who can pass well and carry the puck well. Absolutely getting some more grit back there is important but guys like Larsson or Manson or Gudas will disappoint. They will just be another Zaitsev, perhaps better but still the same thing. Not good at carrying the puck so they'll chip it out along the glass and then setup in front and block shots since they never have the puck. Brodin would be far better for TO. Guys like Strahlman when he was still good. I think Liljegren is turning into that and I think Lehtonen could do well with Rielly in that sense as well. Defensive defenceman don't exist in this era. They are just a reminder of the clutch and grab era and actually don't really do anything beyond add an element of toughness and sometimes PK help. Dumba absolutely would be a good add but his contract is too high and the cost to acquire too much for what he's worth for TO.

The Leafs don't actualy need that. They need a top4 2-way D.

And then they need to play team defense with more structure, while paying more attention to details.

I can't say if CGY would bite, but it's an interesting idea. Adding Bennett and signing Crawford at a decent cap cost seems like a good thing if you can pull it off.

But yeah, I wouldn't make that MINN trade if I were the Leafs.

They definitely need a partner for Rielly. They do not need #1 elite RHD like many think. They just need someone who can effectively move the puck alongside Rielly so Rielly can have freedom to move. Too often teams just guide him to the left and he's stuck and his partner can't do anything except get to the red line and dump it in. If his partner could also move the puck well, it would open up even more space for Rielly.

Agreed - so who? 2 way D who is physical... and can carry the puck, and can pass... lol .. oh and makes under $5M... It actually might be Subban if NJ would be willing to retain a bunch of salary

Subban is not worth 4.5 m. I am fine with a UFA like Gudas, Braun etc.

One D does not solve the structural problem of the Leafs

I really would love a guy like Foligno... Would you make the trade swapping out Dumba for Brodin?

Yeah, even a guy like Bortuzzo actually moves the puck, pinches and holds the zone pretty well. He's not just a lunkhead blocking shots all day.

Dude... Subban is worth 4.5... don't be silly... If you show up at training camp and Radko Gudas is paired with Reilly, he will march into Dubas' office, submit his trade request, and then drag bunt a fart on the way out of the room

P.K. is an offensive D who is not very good in his own end. He ended up with 18 points last season.

Rielly should be happier with a guy like Gudas, as Rielly can use his strenght of skating and attacking. With P.K., Rielly would have to cover up for him all the time.

Do you know who Radko Gudas is??? I actually hope the leafs sign him. But not to play with Reilly.... Holl would be better partner than Gudas

I hope they get someone just as we describe - solid D, who's not overwhelmed by big minutes and big players... I'm tired like everyone else is of the brutal Dzone coverage.. part of it is personel, and part of it is system. Thnks for ll the input... love this site.

lol
