Balancing the roster, at the end you have to give a way one of the top salaries meaning taken less or go for draft picks which does not help the current roster. UFA is not the avenue cap issue. The leafs invested 50% of the salary cap on 4 players that’s the problem.

It's a fact not a story. The leafs had something going before Tavares. Imagine keeping Kadri instead of going for Tavares and invest in the D core instead. Kyle Dubas would had something to show for.

Pass from Toronto. Ristolinen is an offensive rhd we dont need that. He is horrible defensively and would just be another barrie. Toronto needs a defensive defenseman (Murphy or Savard).

In general if Nylander was to go it would be for a significant upgrade on the blue line not ristolinen.

So overpay a Tyler Myers type with the $$ they saved.
