RFA with no arb rights... seems like we have to give him whatever he wants.

Dubas has done good things (Zaitsev, Muzzin, Mikheyev) but he's done a lot of harm to this team (Kadri/Barrie, contract signings, giving a 1st for a 1 year cap dump with minimal protection)

Everyone knows he gets pushed around on contract negotiations. Everyone else is laughing at the contracts we are handing out.

You have to give a player a contract he will sign or you dont have that player.
And are you really that pants'd about a difference of a whole 3 spots in the draft worth of protection?

And proceed to be dog **** and miss the playoffs by a mile.

Yeah cause we are cup contenders... oh wait... we were dog **** anyways and now we don't have picks to get ELC contracts and a way out of cap hell.

Let him play in Zurich for 1M/season.

It's not like he made us contenders anyways.

How did Tampa get Point to take 6.75Mx3?

Tkachuk 7Mx3

Aho (OS) 8.454x5

Rantanen 9.25x6 (they were offering him 8M before Marner)

Marner 11Mx6

Which one doesn't match?

They probably were less than what Dubas gave him LOL.

That contract brought his trade value right down. That's how you know it is a bad contract.

You do realize Marner makes less then Rantanen when we take taxes into account. Burkie did an interview a while back talking about it and why it is the most likely reason for Matthews to leave Toronto in 5 yrs.

That's not the price for a cap dump... If that was the price Neal would cost more than two 1sts to move out (obviously not the case).

He's overpaid. At least Edmonton still has their 1st round pick...

2 firsts is likely the cost to dump Neal but that’s the difference between a dump and shedding salary. Dumps are more renting/creating dead cap space. Neal is still an nhl player yes over paid but still a decent player that can contribute which is why it won’t cost oilers much at all to move him.

Yeah, the leafs 90 point winger plays in Switzerland for a year and the leafs are worse and then every one here is yelling at dubas for not giving him everything he asked for. Like so many here were before the season

except the taxes thing is mostly fluff and even in high tax markets the difference isnt all that much due to accouting and a million little loopholes that star athletes pay accountants to take advantage of

Just throwing this out there..you do realize ownership may have had a hand in the contract negotiations for Marner? MLSE was recently coming off the loss of Kawhi who they would have offered the world to. Could you imagine if they lost a second money driver for them on a different team?

I'm just going off of what Burkie said. You and I have (likely) 0 years working in hockey. Burke has like 30.

Not to mention all of the marketing dollars a guy like Matthews/Marner will get in Toronto vs Florida, Tennessee/Nevada/etc.

Okay he played hardball with Nylander and got Nylander on a reasonable contract. I have absolutely no problem with that and I never did.

Anaheim did the same thing with Rackell.

I would have done the same thing with Marner except I would have let him sit the whole season if I had to.

I definitely think MLSE meddled in his signing. Losing Kawhi was a big blow for the appearences of Toronto sports so they couldn't possibly risk losing Marner as well. Besides they suck without Marner. (Remember when he was hurt?)

So one of Holloway, Gunler, Zary, Jarvis, Sanderson or Quinn is what Toronto gave up to get rid of the Marleau contract.

Definitely disappointing. Think we should hold onto our next few years so Toronto can get some high-level talent back in the system.

Could have been worse. They could have decided that it would be unnecessary to protect the pick

Except they did protect it top-10.
