I think that's a good deal for the leafs. Sure they give up the best player in Nylander, but Severson is exactly what they need...a really good dman on a cheaper deal with term. Zacha is on a team friendly deal and has upside and the picks help replenish the system or allow for future trades.
The leafs problem is obvious isn't it? Too much money tied up in forwards. Nyander is the guy to move if you move anyone IMO

A top 4 RHD, a solid defensive Center who can play wing, a top 11 pick in a deep draft and a 3rd isnt enough? With retention? Idk man pretty solid deal for a team lacking depth, defense, and prospects.

The same cap that has 3 F's taking up 41%? Kinda tough to create a balanced roster.
True you dont ideally want to deal Nylander because he has a good contract, but you cant really deal Mathews, Marner and JT

I agree that you cannot trade Matthews and JT, but Marner would be the best choice to trade away. Because when you trade away Nylander, you actually don't solve any problems because his contract is actually good and any player you get who is quality will also earn the same amount of money. And you split it in half you get like two 3rd liners for his money.

Trading away Marner on the other hand leaves room for a 6m player and a 5m player, which I think it a salary for a good top 4 D and a solid winger, or some other combinations.

Trading Marner is the only way solving the problem. trading away anybody else is just working around the problem.

I have seen quite a few games and I think Severson kind of sucks. He does not stand out on a poor D corps

I guess it's just more difficult to trade MM. With that cap hit it's tough for teams to fit him in unless other money comes back, which is something Im sure the leafs don't want (maybe expiring deals). He doesn't have a NTC, so maybe a team like DET, NJD etc would have interest...they should...he's super good at hockey

I was always saying my dreal deal would be Dermott+Marner for Heiskanen and Pavelski. The Leafs would have to move Pavelski and Cogliano after 1 year they would have to move Pavelksi, but I think this would help the Leafs quite a bit

ahh no thanks. whole point of that deal was to acquire a physical defensive D, not get rid of Wood.

just wanted some skilled vets, Devils probably have to overpay any free agent to get them to come here. both 2 year deals too so not the end of the world

I don't think Dallas would ever move Heiskanen, he's in the same category as Q Hughes, Makar, Dahlin imo. With all due respect to Marner, you just don't trade a defenceman with that kind of skillset for a winger.
