Description

Well it looks like Ilya Sorokin could potentially start the waive of KHL and European players coming over. Even KHL holdouts like (in CHI's case) Ivan Nalimov will at least want to burn that ELC year. There's give and take especially in Ivan's case...so that's part of it, but guys like Pius Suter can sign and burn a year...then get slightly more from any team. I just think he's best suited to come to the Hawks. They've proven they can import players and then the players get big money.

That's an extension, not his ELC. He's on his ELC this year. You cannot play in the NHL without an ELC

Pius can sign his ELC today...it gets burned and tomorrow sign another extension. Literally what happened with Sorokin. What's stopping anyone from doing the same thing?

I think you are both right and wrong.

the ELC has some rules.

age 18-21 3 years with salary limit
age 22-23 2 years with salary limit
age 24 1 year with ELC salary limit
age 25 no salary limit

Suter is one year younger than Sorokin, who will be 25 in august

I think that must be the reason for that.

I think he would have to sign a one year deal at ELC maximum (925 I think) first (which I think can inlude performance bonus)

But if the ELC is a burn year and he's not getting any money for that anyway...wouldn't he prefer100% salary because bonuses don't count toward the 105% bump on the next contract?

Minor details, but still fun to talk about.

Highly highly unlikely Suter jumps into a top 6 role. He is likely a 3rd liner and 15 goal scorer. Suter is not the same type of player Kubalik is, Suter is a two way center known for defense first, but is not a shooter.

The Athletic covered it this morning saying that he would be signing a one year deal and would not be eligable to burn a year during the playoffs

Yes, he plays the net, has some speed and decent wrist shot but not a shooter, and he did that a couple big notches below the NHL. His game will not translate as quickly as Kubalik's did and probably never to that level. He likely will start on the 4th line and move up to 3rd. He's definitely worth the risk to sign, but hardly a replacement for Saad.
