Détails additionnels:
Avs get a young crease-clearing Dman who can replace Cole when he heads to UFA, and possibly make Graves expendable 1-2 years down the line as well.

In this trade Avs get a prospect picked in the 2nd round and a high 2nd. The 3rd is 3 drafts away.

Avs could probably get a 2nd + 3rd for each of Jost and Zadorov... or 2 2nd's + 2 3rd's total (so this trade is "short" by a 3rd. However, the fact that the 2nd is a high 2nd, and that Samuelson is closer to NHL ready, balances that value. The 3rd rounder is 3 drafts away so that Buffalo aren't trading too many short-term futures.
BUF
  1. Jost, Tyson [Droits de RFA]
  2. Zadorov, Nikita [Droits de RFA]
Détails additionnels:
Buffalo pick up a physical LHD that enables them to move Ristolainen (and go with Jokiharju/Montour/Miller on the right).

They also get a young C with 2C upside who may break out with a change of scenery and a clear opportunity for top 6 minutes. Jost thrives with good players, and in Buffalo Jost would get the opportunity to play a line with Olofsson and Cozens.

All this positivity from Sabres' fans has me thinking that it's an overpayment from Colorado sarcasm

What are your thoughts on the balance of the trade? I'm not sure how much value Samuelsson has because it's hard to evaluate how much progress defensive Dmen have made since the draft. I kinda feel like there should maybe be an additional piece added on Buffalo's side, or maybe something like an additional 6th for 4th swap favouring Colorado. What do you think?

Well, rather, the value of B prospect, also our second is quite high #38. Perhaps this is and not not enough on our part, I do not know.

Deal Mittelstadt for Jost was often previously considered between Colorado fans, but then this deal would have looked different.

What value would you say Mittelstadt has right now, purely in terms of draft picks?

Agree. Upgrading the 2022 pick to a 2nd in either 2021 or 2022 would probably make it more balanced.

It's hard to say, he progressed at the end of the season playing in AHL, I still do not consider him a bust, even if in the future he cannot become a center in NHL, he can be a solid winger in the top 9.

Nikita is quite an adequate guy and I see no problems with his return, maybe Krueger could talk to him.

I disagree with that. Samuelsson isnt a B prospect but I dont see why Colorado wants him. The 2nd is too high. 2021 2nd and 2022 3rd would be fine.

I agree about bring Zadorov back not a great idea, and I really do not want to trade Samuelsson he is rarity in the Buffalo D prospects he knows how to play defense.

And what is his prospect then? Why not? They give Zadorov away, Cole will also leave soon, maybe Samuelsson will be useful to them in the future, especially since this idea was proposed by a Colorado fan.

Colorado are very deep at LHD at the NHL level, but once Byram graduates this offseason we'll only have one reasonably good LHD prospect in Zhuravlyov. Zhuravlyov was a late round pick who plays a stable defensive game and who partnered Romanov at the WJC. He's done well since being drafted, but is still a bit of a long-shot at this stage.

Zadorov will likely get traded this offseason (due to a combination of us needing to make room for Byram; his salary demands for a 3rd pairing guy; and ED exposure).

Then in 2021 Cole will likely leave via UFA.

That means that our D shapes up like this for 2021/22 (once Byram and Timmins have established themselves):

Byram ---------- Makar
Girard ---------- Johnson
Graves --------- Timmins
(Zhuravlyov -- Helleson)

Erik Johnson will gradually become a 3rd pairing Dman and when his contract ends in 2023 hopefully Helleson will be able to take his place as a steady defensive 3rd pairing guy. Helleson is a big guy, but adding someone like Samuelsson to replace that shutdown ability will be important.

Graves is a very nice Dman to have, as he can continue to play on the top pairing, and then drop down to the 3rd pairing once Byram has established himself. Eventually Graves will become too pricey to keep around on the 3rd pairing though, and that is when it would be nice to have someone to replace him - and ideally that replacement would be a big and physical shutdown guy who can eat PK minutes and also be fairly cheap. That is, someone like Samuelson.

I like Ryan Johnson's game and think it would fit our style as well, but given that we have Byram and Girard who are both quite offensive puck-moving types it makes more sense for us to acquire a big physical guy for that 3rd pairing role long-term. Especially since we're going to need to replace Johnson and likely Graves as well within 3 years.

I think its pretty close, i would not be upset if this went down. Jost helps out right away and even if samuelsson ends up better than zadorov, i dont think its by much. So colorado trades a depth forward that they can spare, and picks up a nice prospect and some decent picks.

Avs lack a 2020 2nd, and so that will be an essential part of the return on the return on Jost and/or Zadorov.

Moreover, the only reason I'm not asking for another additional 3rd/prospect is because the 2nd is a relatively high 2nd. If you want to make it a 2021 2nd - thereby likely lowering the value of it AND pushing it a year into the future, then I'd be inclined to insist on getting another 3rd, or since you only have 1 3rd in the next 3 drafts - making the 3rd into another 2nd. To me that would be more fair since both Jost and Zadorov are worth a 2nd + 3rd each.

To clarify, the trade would be:

Zadorov
Jost

for

Samuelsson
BUF 2021 2nd
BUF 2022 2nd

OR

Zadorov
Jost

for

Samuelsson
BUF 2020 2nd
BUF 2022 3rd

In the 2nd trade here I'd also be inclined to also swap a 4th and 6th (in Colorado's favour) as I think it still leaves a tiny bit lacking on Buffalo's side, given that Buffalo are getting 2 proven NHL players and Avs are getting only futures.

They have Graves Girard Byram on the left side, Zadorov is their weakest link. Thats also why I doubt they need Samuelsson. Samuelsson is an A prospect. Captained the USA U-18 team, Captain at Western Michigan. Big physical Dman with more offensive upside than Zadorov and clearly a great leader.

I'm not sure that he will be better than Zadorov in the attack, he also has problems with riding. But this is my opinion.
