Description

On July 1st, 2015, the Penguins traded Nick Spaling, Kasperi Kapanen, Scott Harrington and their 2016 1st and 3rd round pick to the Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel with 15% retained salary, Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon and a 2016 2nd round pick. Kessel was a talented elite winger who had a controversial reputation since he was regarded as lazy, selfish, soft, and a locker room cancer. Currently, the Leafs have a winger in a similar situation, Mitch Marner. I'm not saying both teams should or will pull of a trade like that again, but just an idea.

So kessel at peak, and marner not at peak yet are at a similar level, and? You do realize that means marner is more valuable because any team trading for him has the entire peak of his career and not the tail end of it, right?

Yes you are right. But Marner’s contract is worse, so that still deflates his value.

Yes but Marner scores a bunch of points on the powerplay too.

Agree I wouldn’t trade Marino for him. But due to the cap situation with the possibility of it going down / staying flat, the Leafs won’t have much leverage if they want to trade him. So that’s why I feel they can explore a Kessel type deal.

I'd obviously do it if I was the Penguins but I just don't see Toronto trading Marner unless he's absolutely god awful next year

Penguins accept...Toronto not so much. I don’t think they are in that desperate of a situation that they need to trade Marner as they were with Kessel.
