I think quality players will want 2 year deals more than longterm. It'll cover 2 years of flat cap, then it'll jump again after Seattle gets a season under their belts.

The lower end players might want the term just for the money security.

thats nonsense. if the cap is depressed, guys will be taking shorter term in the hopes of cashing in when the cap rebounds and money is freed up by the expansion draft.

a 30 year old isn't going to sign a 5 year contract, which would likely make it his last deal at a paycut from his last one. He would maybe do that on a one year deal.

he is coming off a contract that made him over 22 million dollars. if he is signing a 5 year deal the AAV will start at 5. you can get him for 3.5 on a one year deal as he waits out the flat cap and goes for a cup.

Tanev is going to be 31 in December, do you really think an injury prone 31 year old dman can really risk taking a one year deal in the hopes he can find a better payday in the summer of 2021? Maybe but I doubt he'll find any better then what's being proposed here plus this summers free agent class has a lot of dmen in it, there's lots of competition for the dollars available from teams and there's teams like your Sabres that are probably looking to offload a dman which effects the market for free agent dmen somewhat, gotta think some guys are gonna take a bit less AAV for the security of term.
