Can we just stop thinking that Mitch Marner is an elite winger? He’s nowhere near that & is the most vastly overpaid player in the game. Honestly, he’s just not built for the NHL. He’s small, weak & soft. He always gets knocked over & refuses to hit & fight. He doesn’t have the talent to make up for his poor physique. In a few seasons he’ll be out of the league. All he does is throw the puck into a random area & makes Auston Matthews do all the work for him. That’s how he earns his points, most secondary assists. The Leafs were better off giving his roster spot to Nick Robertson or Jeremy Bracco, could’ve saved them 11 million as well. He’s just a more expensive version of Conor Sheary.

Lmao how is marner not elite? hes never had a season under 60pts, had 94 pts last year is never a minus player and has put up pts in the playoffs as well, yes he gets paid A lot of money but thats the money players with his stats are getting nowadays....would take marner on my team anyday. 10.8M really isn't that bad for a player whos getting over 60pts a year and the cap always goes up (minus next season)

gonna repeat this again:

Patty Kane is a small guy who racks up assists and has played with great players like toews and panarin, does that make him bad? Absolutely not. 94 point 22 year olds don't grow on trees. Its not a coincidence that every single player he plays with puts up career numbers (or close to it), especially in goals, every single year. For when u say that's not true:
Rookie Year:
Bozak: 55 pts. High: 49 pts
JVR: 29g/62pts. High: came w Marner the next year but we'll get there
Sophomore:
JVR:36g/54 pts
Kadri: 32g (tied for career high), 55 pts (2nd highest. also missed 2 games)
Y3:
Hyman: 21g (tied with again Marner next year), 41 pts (career high)
Tavares: 47g (>prev. high by 10g), 88pts (career high)
Y4:
Hyman 21g (tied from last year w Marner, highest g/pg by a lot), 37pts (highest p/pg by a lot)
Matthews: 47g(career high and on pace for many more), 80pts (high and on pace for many more)

has played with some pretty good lines, and some pretty average lines, but clear that he drives play and makes his teammates much better.

Marner himself:
61 pts
69pts
94pts
67pts (on pace for 93 in an 82 game season)

Defensive game has also been improving. Now a valuable penalty killer.

I don’t get why everyone compares Marner to Sheary. Sure they are both light finesse players who get knocked over a lot & perhaps have benefitted from playing alongside elite centers, but the skill level between them is not even close.

You are right but I wouldn’t use the penalty killing point. The Leafs are actually not a good team shorthanded & the stats say Marner is below average in that aspect as well. He is decent defensively at 5v5 (approximately on the same level as Panarin) & is elite offensively.

stats don't say everything- having watched nearly every game he's an effective PK guy, the main issue is that they don't have a center that is good on the PK. The top unit is Hyman and Marner, who both kill penalties well but get absolutely abused in the face-off dot, which is huge, especially when you're down a man- not having a C on the PK cost them game 6 last year

10.89 million for a 60 point guy is steep but Marner has scored at a 90+ point pace over the last 2 seasons so his contract isn’t as bad as it seems.

I just find it hilarious that they would want to trade marner and sign sheary who is 5 years older and has hit over 50pts one time in his carrer and has never hit 25G lol

yeah for sure 10.8 is steep for a 60pt player but thats the kind of cash being dished out, he has his 94pt season already under his belt and I personally think thats the player theyre paying for in the long run 70+ point guy all the time.

Yeah agree Sheary is a pure product of Crosby. The stats say he’s pretty good at driving play in a sheltered role but he doesn’t bring much scoring. I would like to see Marner hit 100+ points in the next few seasons. He has the potential for sure.

Marner is really good at hockey even if he's overpaid. IF this deal was offered to DET two things would happen. 1-they accept and giggle every time its mentioned in the future and 2-Dubas is fired and gets tomatoes thrown at him by leafs fans

You simply can’t compare Marner to Kane. Marner gets carried by Matthews & van Riemsdyk whereas Kane carries his linemates Toews, Strome, Panarin & Nylander. No one cares how many points Marner scores cuz he’s been riding Matthews’ coattails.
