Filling out the roster with no Muzzin

Description
I like Muzzin but I can’t help think the money spent on him couldn’t have been spent better on filling out the roster this summer. I realize they couldn’t let him walk after trading away prospects/pick, but with the money saved on him and trading away one of the bottom six guys, you have a little more than 11mil to use after resigning Mikheyev and Spezza. Eventually the Leafs will want to give more minutes to Sandin and I hope they resign Rielly, I don’t really see the need for Muzzin.

Posting a different take, I put Muzzin on LTIR to remove cap hit for this. Switch out trades or signings to whatever you want.

so, the leafs 'save' just under 2.5 million by switching Muzzin out for Edmundson. Then proceed to spend those cap savings on a 4th liner and a decent 2nd pairing guy who they have to shoe horn into the top paring and they STILL have to trade a guy who is a 2nd liner (and clear another 2ish mill) when healthy to complete it all.
Ignoring the fact that Edmundson is an incredible downgrade defensively on Muzzin (and offensively too), this doesnt hold much water or make the team better

Serenity now, serenity now! Again, switch out the signings to whatever you like.

ok, i sign Muzzin because he's the leafs best actual defender and try to flesh out things around him instead of replacing him with cheaper, lesser options

A roster of Mathews, Taveres, Kerfoot, Spezza, Milky, Hyman, Johnsson, Engvall, Nylander, Maner, Kapanen, Barabanov, Rielly, Sandin, Muzzin, Holl, Anderson, Campbell, gives the Leafs 2.53 mil to fill out two D postions. Who are you adding?

I see who is available and who wants to sign with the Leafs, if DeMelo is indeed interested in signing for that much, then i use the offseason cap overage allotment to find that extra mill and a bit in cap space with the best offer i can find etc. I dont move players just to move them and then fill out the cap space later.

I not talking about moving guys out, I just think the money spent on another LD (Muzzin) could have been better spent elsewhere. IMO

But it couldn't have been spent better elsewhere because you cant get a guy as good as muzzin for the money. Opening up that massive hole on LHD simply to slap overtheir head bandaids on RHD doesnt make the leafs better

Ok, build me a roster from the team bellow without trading anyone away, like you said. Sign DeMelo and another RD. And I will only ask for 1 scratch.

Why cant i trade someone? Is this a roster game or are we trying to,y'know, make the leafs better?
Because if it's a game with unrealistic rules?
In the case of the latter i sign peitro and demelo to league min and scratch holl

Would rather keep muzzin. One of the leafs best defenseman, provides leadership to everyone, and is a great mentor to the rookies. Leafs traded for him for a reason. On top of that can hit hard and is a shot blocker

I think both DeMelo and Edmundson get more AAV than that (probably 4) and a lot more term as they're both only 26. And if Muzzin can stay healthy his contract is fine, no need to trade it. Leafs would be better off getting a haul for Nylander if they want to add assets and create some cap space.

You'd rather move out Nylander (for picks/player) than Muzzin?

I'm not saying they're the same value. I'm saying that if they wanted to move a significant salary and get back good pieces I think Nylander would get them more, and they'd still be a very good offensive team without him. Muzzin, on the other hand, helps them in the area they need improvement on which is defense.

I'll keep the guy who can get you 60+ points a year and find a good cheap shot blocker/checker. But that's just me.

Yeah I probably would too. I don't think they SHOULD trade Nylander or Muzzin. My point was just that Muzzin's contract isn't bad for what he provides, and moving Nylander would probably net the Leafs some good assets if they were trying to clear cap.

Again, all I was trying to do with this post was a different take. I like Muzzin but fill the Leafs need is on the Right side and with the rise of Sandin, he will need more min. I can totally see the Leafs shipping out Muzzin with a pick or prospect to resign Rielly.

So what is the logic of signing the more inexpensive Edmundson and trading the cost efficient Dermot for a guy who isn't even on the team?
And highly unlikely Muzzin can be traded later for pick and prospect. So many teams are near the cap, who can take on a 5.6m contract without sending cap back to the Leafs

lol, ok post your team with DeMelo taking a discount. See how that goes over. Or whoever you pick. Post your roster.

but i didnt say he'd be taking a discount, I said he'd be taking as much as you did and that the Leafs would have to move Johnsson for futures. It's not a hard thing to picture, in fact there are like 3 rosters a day here posted with basically that exact thing going on. It's not ideal, but it's significantly better than not having Muzzin
