Marner's 10.9 million makes him harder to trade, most likely leading the Leafs to accept a garbage contract in return in any trade contacts concerning him. Nylander is actually the easier and better trade bait player to trade.
Don't forget that Marner's first 2 seasons he helped pushed Kadri to back to back 32 goal seasons (Kadri only hit the 20 goal mark once in his career). Now he leads J.T. (he has only scored more than 35 twice before lining up beside Marner) and Matthews (scored 10 more goals with Marner than playing with Nylander the previous season) to 47 goals each in back to back seasons. 158 goals his centers have scored in his 300 NHL games.
I haven't forgotten anything.
I am also not disputing that Marner gets a great deal of assists.
It is not realistic to compare Matthews season this year in terms of goals vs the past two because Matthews missed significant time with injuries. In addition, Marner has not spent the entire season playing with Matthews so the suggestion that Matthews' increase in goals is a direct correlation to playing with Marner is false data. Matthews will get his goals regardless of who he plays with, (Nylander or Marner).
Marner makes far too much money for what it is that he provides. That is why he should be the one who is traded IMO.
I don't think that the Leafs are likely to trade him at all. I am just saying that HE would be my choice of one of 91, 16, 34, or 88 were to be moved.
Like I said before, Love the player, hate the contract. It is still a very tradeable contract and I would not be worried about the Leafs not receiving proper value in return.
Agree to disagree on this and that is just fine with me.
