shortens their window but objectively makes them better defensively without losing much offence

these will be the lines I'd pick for the playoffs when everyone is healthy.

I added a Ceci trade to make this work (according to 31 thoughts teams value Ceci so i didn't consider him a negative asset)

Was going to make a back-up goalie trade but Dreger told me it would cost Marner and that might not even get it done

Minnesota is getting significantly worse.

Rielly is pretty overrated and isn’t good defensively. Brodin is the opposite.

Any Minnesota fan that doesn't say, 10000% yes is a delusional homer that can't be taken seriously. What a joke of an era we live in. Rielly goes from being 5th in Norris votes and now has no value.

Rielly is light years more valuable than Brodin and Kapanen has more value than Zucker who's older, slower and isn't producing much more, despite getting way more opportunities. This is just a travesty.

Rielly is very underrated defensively. He is certainly an ofd but plays a hard defensive game as well.

Rielly is a very good defenseman. He’s having a tough season, but we have to keep in mind he’s been playing with an undisclosed injury plus he’s had to play alongside Barrie, a guy who shows no commitment to playing a responsible defensive game at all. Last season alongside the steady Hainsey, he was excellent. Hopefully he will be rested and back to his best.

The numbers absolutely do not support this. He's extremely overrated by leaf fans and Toronto media. I don't care how many Norris votes he gets.

What stats are you basing him off? The same ones that suggest Mitch Marner is overrated and a below replacement level player?

Most of that is incorrect.

Rielly wasn't his usual self, due to injury yes. However, Barrie has been the best partner he's had possibly in his career. Barrie has been much better under Keefe and since he was put with Rielly. Sure he takes chances but that does more positive than harm. Ceci was a terrible partner and Hainsey wasn't much better. Rielly is terrific and if ever he can get a top notch partner, we'd really see how great he is.

No one says Mitch Marner is a below replacement level player. You are just making that up. But it's been pretty clear for years that Rielly is average or below average defensively. This year is a down year across the board but it's always been the case.

People who act like he's elite are just looking at point totals and secondary assists.

The numbers in your head doesn't mean anything. I would be amazed if anyone else on the planet is going to agree with you on this. Many may say Rielly is overrated, they will also tell you they hate the leafs more than they like their own team. But to find others who think Brodin is better than Rielly, that just won't happen.

Oh, have you looked into how many secondary assists he has? Or like everything in this thread, are you just angrily yelling nonsense at your screen while have zero tangible evidence to support anything you are saying. He did lead the NHL in goals from a defenceman last year and 5v5 goals as well. Yeah he is more offensive than defensive, but he's also never had a good partner. Not once. You're just dust bud.

I agree that Barrie has played better alongside Rielly, but they still haven’t been great. I think Rielly would do well if Leafs traded for Tanev.

I live in Toronto so I get to see Rielly in TV. Last season he was dynamic at both ends of the ice, so he definitely deserved Norris votes.

The false narrative that Leafs fans have created regarding Rielly defensively has to stop. He’s an excellent offensive defender no doubt but........he’s a train wreck in his own end and it’s easy to see when you watch the team play. Oh and 5th in Norris voting means nothing as most of us know the Norris trophy is a joke and has been for ages.

That is simply incorrect. People on here don't know how hockey is played. To have great defensive numbers, you need a full 5 man unit working cohesively in their own zone. TO hasn't and still doesn't do this consistently, and then they get scored on and idiots say its one guys fault. Learn how things work before piping off.

His isolated defensive impact is not good. Why can't you just accept that he's not got in his own end? He's not a good one-on-one defender. His strengths are keeping the puck out of his own end.

That's really not how hockey works lol, somehow guys like Marcus Foligno are able to put up great defensive numbers while surrounded by guys with bad-average defensive numbers, look at Edmonton, surprisingly, most of their team is about average defenseively, but their "big three" (offensively at least) are all terrible defensively, while their surrounded by a bunch of average, they can individually perform way worse than all of their teammates but not drag them down to their level, or be brought up to their teammates level
