Montreal took a guess on him. And since they had cap flexibility and nothing to loose at this point they gave him a call. Team were afraid of kovalchuk long term inactivity and since almost everyteam who are in playoff contention are tight against the cap no one would take the risk of wasting money on him. But now thing are different, he look like the great players he use to be. He will draw a log of interest around the league by the deadline. Game after game he keep competing at a higher level and showing to everyone that he still got it.

Im annoyed the Bs didnt take a shot at him, but no chance they trade their best prospect for him. Or any other team for that matter

I agree on that i don’t think team will give prospect for him but i think that some team will be welling to pay a second round for him. Is contract make him a high prize players. He won’t affect the cap and the team won’t need to gave some players back for salary purpose of the cap.

Second best prospect, I think Studnicka is still Boston's best prospect.

Montreal has several injuries in their top 6. Perhaps Kovy choose Montreal because it was the best chance he had to prove his own worth, so he could be flipped to a contender at the deadline. If Kovy wanted to make the playoffs, he wouldn't have signed with Montreal, and that contract doesn't scream "In it for the money". You are right, many other teams could have given him that contract. Very few teams were going to throw him in their top 6 right away (or ever).

8 points in 8 games. At the very least he has proven that he can play up in their lineup if injuries occur. My point is he likely choose Montreal over other teams because it was his best opportunity to prove he can still play. To date, he has done exactly that. If he signs with any other team he likely gets buried in the lineup or AHL and doesn't get the same look. Contenders likely don't want him to play that high in their lineup, but a 3rd line winger that can play higher in the lineup seems like a great asset going into the playoffs.

He chose Montreal because nobody else wanted him. Sorry, but that’s the truth. Others did kick the tires, but Montreal was the only team willing to drive him off the lot.

He’s sucked for 2 years, 2 weeks does not change that perception. He keeps it up then Habs will be able to get a mid round pick at the deadline for him. Not a premium prospect like this and it won’t be Boston.

I haven't suggested he would get the return mentioned above, but he will get more than a mid round pick because he is showing his worth now, not his worth in LA this year (9 points in 17 games) or last year. Some players just don't mesh with certain teams systems (i.e. Tatar in Vegas (6 points in 20 games) compared to Montreal (101 points in 130 games). I think its foolish, to claim no one else wanted him just because Montreal got him. Only one team could be chosen, and any team could have sent him down to the AHL if it didn't work out. His contract was 0 risk to any team that wanted him. Montreal has the roster spot he wanted to prove himself.

If you don't want Boston to trade for him, fine. But pretending Kovalchuk didn't have options or hasn't built trade value now is just being close minded or lazy.

No it’s the truth. Sorry. Nobody was going to sign him and send him to the AHL. He did not choose to sign a 2 way deal with non-contender for league minimum for chance to prove himself, he did it because it was his only option. If he had a better one he would have taken it. He did not.

Fans are impressed by name brand recognition and small sample sizes. I assure GMs are not. He is back on their radar. But he will have to play well for more than 2 weeks. The likely hood of maintaining this pace is slim and when he does not the delusions of grandeur of getting much more than a 3rd round pick will go out the window.
