Which depth guys? And why trade a top of the lineup player to free up money to sign depth guys? I certainly don't think any rational GM would do that. They have almost 16 million in space next year and they don't have to deal with those stupid LTIR contracts so that will make their job much easier. 8 of their top 9 forwards are under contract, with the last one an RFA. They need to spend some money on D, and be mindful of the future, but your comment doesn't make a ton of sense.
Your not wrong a but a good GM does what he can to acquire good players Pietrangelo is a good player. My guess if no moves are made Leafs let Ceci and Muzzin walk I wouldn't feel comfortable trusting 2 rookies eating those minutes. That means likely re-signing Barrie and moving him into top 4, he will probably cost more than he does now, otherwise you need to go shop for a guy and that could get more expensive.
Mikheyev will probably require a raise as will most of the other RFA's.
Finally your backup goalie. You can go cheap and re-sign Hutchinson, but I'm betting KD isn't going to lose his job like that, so that's more money.
After Leafs finish re-signing the guys they want to keep you might have 6 Million left over. You haven't made your team better yet other than a backup goalie. 6 Million probably doesn't get you the guy in the open market that will get you passed the Bruins or Capitals in the playoffs.
Leafs have drafted well and deserve to reap the rewards, but at some point you need to turn the corner and switch to a win now mentality.
