Far-fetched I know....but interesting if doable...provided LA commits to a rebuild. Parts are interchangeable of course.

Kings can’t retain that much in a realistic rebuild, without atleast a first coming back, 2.5 retained going to be a costly adventure for duration of contract

As others mentioned, Kings aren’t biting on that. As a bruins fan, I would be terrified of the leafs with Doughty on their top pair.

Figured with Nylander and Liljegren included, the 2nd makes up for the lack of a 1st.

Probably pretty close, just such a duration of contract with a realistic rebuild, and need the 2.5 to pay the kids in 5 years. Kings probably stuck in purgatory beside the blackhawks instead of rebuilding or even retooling with youthful players

Definitely long...but no way Leafs could do it without some kind of significant retention. Maybe $2M? I don't think the Kings would have a problem signing their kids, even with that retention. Especially if Brown, Carter, Quick and Toffoli are gone too.

Your probably right, just see a run of mediocre kings teams, to ride out the years with the players with the cup rings, then probably a lengthy rebuild, over your one simple trade which should lead to others. But past glory will prevail. Good build with a slight adjustment here or there

I dunno though.....I think he would consider it if the Kings planned on going full rebuild.

They have enough good pieces that would speed up a rebuild if done properly.....gotta sell now though. No use waiting. Kopitar might be the only one to stick around.

Yup. Just like Chicago. Both teams took chances and were able to strike while their iron was hot. Leafs gotta hope for the same thing. Boom or bust I guess. Windows don't stay open as long as they used to with these inflated salaries.

It's still a big gamble that Doughty is gonna be 8.5m effective for years. Doughty is kinda retired in LA. He ain't waiving

Leafs would be better off trading Nylander for futures let's say a the equivalent of 1st and second rounder. Having Korshov promoted to play wing, Engvall looks centre for Leafs next year. Then taking that Nylander money and signing a modest UFA or two to play defence along with LIljegren.

Need a bit of a riverboat gambler gm on occasion to pull some signings or trades that may originally look bad and come into fruition. Chevy was doing pretty well with that, but I was hoping for a gamble on laine before he plays himself out of town. I think leafs had some decent deals this off season, cost of the stars are going to be interesting down the stretch, but I think this team could come together with a bruiser or two at deadline. Easier to buy veteran role players than the stars that are signed up to take ownership of squad

I figure Doughty will be $8.5M worthy for at least 3 or 4 more years, especially if re-invigorated by joining a Cup-conteding team.....which is what the Leafs need according to their window. After that, all bets are off. They would figure it out from there. Trading Nylander for futures wouldn't fit if they're trying to win now.

Yeah I was 75% convinced Laine was gonna get dealt for help on D before he eventually signed. It seemed like a break-up was coming. Crazy how the Jets went from having the strongest right side D in the league to what it became in such a short period of time.

Healthy happy buffy and I still think they would have been all right, but that added on, left one large hole or 22 million ish in salary between trouba buffy and Myers leaving, not many squads with stand that without any growing pains. I figured laine would bridge, I just wished they would have gambled like they did on ehlers, scheifele and now morrissey. I figure laine is on 1 year arbritration deals til a year or two before ufa status or the right offer comes in, he’s not a jet after his 27th birthday imo

The purposes of trading Nylander for futures was to give you cap space to get a Dman or two (not named Doughty). Then you still have Liljegren, Engvall and the pick.
I'm not convinced the 2020 to 2024 or 2028 version of Doughty is what the Leafs need.
IMO the current version of the Leafs is worse than last years. So we'll see what the Leafs do next summer after 5 UFA Dmen leave and they still might have a forward to get cap to solidify the defence.

My question is this... how much is it going to hurt them having the whole 11m? Even with the retention you are saving 1.5m and nylander and Lilly will both be doing better than doughty in 3 years.

As a leafs fan this deal makes me cringe. But I do understand why a team wouldn’t want to retain for 7yrs. But three years from now you will be wising this was done. Ask hawks fans.

I don’t do the deal, I bargain hunt dman and develop along with over that much commitment to one guy. Term and money is taken, and Dubas needs to earn his stripes in picking up bargains and pieces that fit with the nucleus. Easier to find rentals and bargains over longterm talent. Just need to preach a different sort of patience

If I’m TO... I don’t even offer that. I think LA will be stuck with him till the end. One bad contract won’t be a back breaker and he will be a good vet presence and mentor.

Kings have already said that Doughty and Kopitar are not moving, those 2 players are the pillars of those rebuild. A Martinez could be had, Trevor Lewis, Clifford etc. These are players that could be targeted by the Leafs and it would be a Kapenen or Johansson that heads west

After seeing what Gardiner got 4,05m 4 yrs, maybe the age thirties players aren't going to get top salaries now. I figure the Leafs will have 7m to spend on three Dmen after their RFAs and a goalie is signed.
Let's say Muzzin takes 5m of the 7m.. That Leafs then have 1m each on 2 veteran Dman. But more that likely I think maybe 3.2m Kapanen is traded for futures and replaced by 1m winger. Now besides Muzzin the Leafs now have 4.2m to spend on two Dmen. So maybe your sixth and seventh guys makes 3m and 1.5m
