That's not how contracts work
Different teams and management have there own philosophies on how to manage their team. An athletic article about Tampa bay specifically recently came out showing how they usually sign young guys to a cheap 3 year bridge deal and then they sign them long term afterwards.
Johnson, killorn, palat, kucherov, vasilevsky, etc.
The highest cap hit of any of those players on 3 year deals so far, Kucherov $4.766M. A lot better than paying $11M for your RFA's.
Brisebois is currently offering Point less than $6M on a 3 year deal. Tampa Bay has taxes going for them, but even with that they are doing way better than Toronto at getting players to buy in.
Honestly I have no idea what Toronto was thinking when it came to Matthews.
I have no idea why Nylander wasn't traded after pulling the stunt he did.
