Canucks pay to dump on the Ducks

Description
The Canucks have too many forwards and could use some more cap space to maneuver the next couple years. Of the two main candidates to move, Sutter should be a lot cheaper to dump than Eriksson. To do it the Canucks target ANA for a few reasons;

1) The Ducks have gobs of cap space even before factoring in their LTIR guys.
2) They just hired Brandon's Uncle Darryl as a coaching advisor (I know, that doesn't mean ****).
3) They could really use another RHD.... enter Chris Tanev.

By upgrading a 2020 pick and sending Tanev to the Ducks at 50% retained, it may just be enough value to move Sutter's contract. If the Ducks still see themselves as a legitimate threat to make the playoffs adding Tanev could really help them, and if they're out of the race by the trade deadline then they can move Tanev and his half-price contract for a nice return.

For VAN to do this they have to have confidence that Gaudette can be their full-time 3C (I think he's already a better option than Sutter anyway) and that two of Benn, Juolevi, Fantenberg, Biega, Rafferty, Sautner, Teves, etc. can form a good 3rd pairing.

Even so, they have 1 guy to resign over the next two years, I see no reason why they shouldn't get Tanev and a pick for basically free (and they really don't, eaves and Kessler are LTIR, Getzlaf isn't too big for what he still brings and only 2 years Henrique's is probably a year or two too long, but aside from that there are plenty of teams that have worse contracts than those

The only reason you can say that is because they don’t have cap issues. Just because they are not a problem does not mean they are not bad contracts.

Tanev is overated. Most metrics show him to be a 3rd pair to low end 2nd pair. There are better options.

For 1 year it poses no risk

Not worth adding Sutter for another year. Or the eventual buyout when you can acquire better options for reasonable cost.

Question, would you rather have Tanev for one season and a 3rd round pick or cap space to possibly go after one of the bigger UFAs next offseason? Yes the ducks have cap space but with Perry’s cap hit going up $4M next season and adding $4+M in Sutter that going to make it hard to add anyone of significance for next season which should be a big season deciding if the next group becomes legit cup contenders or not.

Sure, but it also offers very little benefit. I'm still looking at this trade and asking "What's in it for us?"

As I see it:
1) Replacing Grant with Sutter on the 4th line = minor upgrade
2) Replacing Larsson/Hakanpaa with Tanev on the 3rd pair RD = minor upgrade
3) Replacing our 6th round pick with a 3rd = minor upgrade

I mean, I guess there is no downside but...helping out a division rival while getting nothing significant in return kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth...hem, haw, hem, haw...Okay, fine, make it a 2nd round pick and I'm on board

To be honest, I'd rather pay the extra $100,000 and have Stecher rather than Tanev. Then I would upgrade from a 6th to a 4th or maybe add a prospect.

By the simple expedient of not re-signing Devin Shore, the Ducks should have about $7MM for a free-agent RD next summer even with having to re-up Terry, Sherwood, Guhle and Larsson. And Sutter instead of Shore might not be such a terrible step down. I wonder how Vancouver values Stecher vs. Tanev.

By my math the ducks will have roughly $11M in cap space to re-sign their RFAs, fill the back up G position and replace the scratches. Yes some of those can be filled from within with ELCs but you’ll have to add those cap hits. There’s not nearly as much cap left bringing in Sutter and really hinders the chances of being able to sign a top UFA.

I've done two simulations. One assumes Sutter and Stecher (re-upped at $4.75MM) also allows Dylan Demelo to be signed at $3.5MM. This requires allowing Shore to walk. The other involves Sutter and Tanev, who is allowed to walk, and then Jared Spurgeon (or someone similar) can be signed for $7MM or Demelo for $4MM; in this scenario, Shore is re-signed at $2.75MM.
