Carrick IMO deserves to be in the NHL, but simply got stuck in an incredibly deep Canes farm system. I think he's going to get a shot this year on SJ's third pairing with Braun gone. This trade essentially buys the Canes two extra years with a younger RHD prospect in Wood, who they may need as Dougie and Faulk are up for extensions in the next two seasons. IOW, this is an excellent trade for both teams.

He's a near 50 point AHL defenseman. That's got to be good for at least the 3rd pairing in the NHL.

As we have seen throughout the years, there are lots of high scoring Dmen and even forwards in the AHL, that for whatever reason never seem to be a crack an NHL lineup.
Maybe Carrick is a perennial "8th man" depth guy, carving out a nice AHL career. But good luck to him on his NHL quest.

Absolutely true. Maybe he has what it takes, maybe not. I thought he may be related to Connor Carrick but nope!

He is still going to be behind Middleton, DeSimone and Heed on the depth chart. Maybe a call-up if one of those guys don't perform well or get injured.

he is, however, the brother of former Leafs great Sam Carrick.

He'll be behind Heed, for sure, due to Heed's right-handedness, but I think that Carrick may get the first shot if one of Simek/Dillon/Vlasic are hurt. He's been VERY productive in the AHL, considerably more so than either Middleton or DeSimone.

AHL productivity does not always translate to the NHL. Our Defense Depth Chart is:
Karlsson
Burns
Vlasic
Dillon
Simek
Heed
Prout
Middleton
DeSimone
Carrick

Not including Merkley and Ferraro etc only guys that are ready.
