You could save that ~1.8million in negative cap space by giving Marner a realistic contract. Both AAV and term are far off.

Rantannen, Marner and Tkachuk's new deals will be heavily influenced by Aho's. And it stuns me no one sees it.

Any Marner deal that is 8 figures should be 7-8 years, and defintely not that far north of $10 million.... understanding the concept of buying UFA years.

But realistically $8.5 over 5 is ground zero now for the three players I have mentioned. It's where it begins. Stats, analytics, style of play may mive the number slightly, but should not significantly.

Where the Leafs are at cap wise, $8.5 over 5 should end it.

There isn't much support to that from an analytics aspect. All the advance stats point to Rantanen being average or below average in a lot of ways but benefits massively by playing with McKinnon. Obviously you can't be an average player and score 90 points but I think without McKinnon he'd be well below a point a game player. Marner has scored at above a point a game since the midway of the season before and that year he played with Kadri and Marleau. Not saying there is a huge difference but Rantanen has some red flags, from an advanced stats point of view.

Aho is slightly less valuable. You will see Rantannen and Marner will both get better contracts and they should. If you follow all these guys, it's pretty easy to see the raw talent and combined ability of Rantennen and Marner is a slight step above Aho. That's not to take away from Aho, he's amazing. If I was a defender on a breakaway, I'd want to face Aho any day of the week over the other two.
