Yeah I think it would make sense if he signs for the same term as Matthews.

Or keep Nylander, sign Marner for 9x5. The thing is, Marner opened negotiations at that number, by the end of the summer he will give way on either length or cap. he will either sign 11x8, or what is more likely around 9x3 or 5.

9x3 makes sense to me. He files for arbitration when his contract is up, likely signs a 1 year deal for around 10 mil, walks right to UFA in year 5.

Definitely could see that being a likely possibility. I just went with 11x5 on the fact that he would be a UFA with Matthews.

I don't think the leafs want this, I genuinely would be shocked if the leafs make any big trades. The leafs roster looks the best it has in decades and I personally think Marner gets done during training camp. His agent Darren Ferris has a history of holding out until September then conceding, look at situations like Athanasiou, Josh Anderson and Sam Bennett. They all asked for a ton more than they got, and all ended up signing in september/october.

idk. dubas has shown that he's the one willing to cave with the nylander contract. so lets see. Bergevin just did teams with rfas a favour though. Like Aho had 8.6 is perfect. in this case, marner should make about 9.5

Nylander also came in asking for 8 mil for 4 years in July , Dubas wanted 6.6x6 like Pastrnak. They ending up doing 6.96x6. Nylander's camp dropped over a mil, while Dubas raised his offer by 360,000. Everyone saying Dubas caved, but if you take a step back and look at the entire breakdown of the saga, I don't think he did. Yeah if Nylander sat out the whole year he could probably sign him to a 6x3 bridge deal this summer, but I think both parties realized they could come to a conclusion. Nylander likely realized missing an entire season could be extremely detrimental to his career.
With that being said I think anywhere from 8.5-9.8 is fair for and realistic for Marner

Toronto has $11,065,301M in cap space right now and that's before adding Horton's $5.3M.. so what's the point of trading a skilled top 6 player like Nylander for garbage?

Marner isn't getting anything close to the Matthews contract. Toronto has made that pretty clear. Either Mitch takes market value or he won't be a Leaf. Highly doubt he gets the 5 years he wants, likely to either be 3 or 6 years and won't be any higher that $10.5M I'd imagine

Since Brian Burke got relieved of his duties as a GM of the Leafs he has never had a positive word to say about them. if you look back on it, he says it was a personal decision, the firing lacked class and professionalism, and what they did wasn't warranted, expected or right. As a Toronto fan there are 3 people we cannot take any info from, Nick Kypreos, Damien Cox and Brian Burke. The leafs could flip a 7th rounder for Crosby and Burke will say that the leafs need prospects and gritty guys to fill the bottom 6, and that pick could be the next Datsyuk. He has a personal vendetta against the leafs, Shanahan and specifically Dubas, since he despises the new analytical side of hockey. It makes sense that he was the most outspoken about Nylander and dubas.

again, if you look at the people who didn't like the Nylander situation, you're looking at one guy who got let go from the leafs and was very public about his hate for the franchise (Burke), one guy who said Marner will never be a star and the leafs should offer him to Edmonton for Nurse (Kypreos), and one guy who said Dan Girardi is better the Erik Karlsson (Damien Cox). no credible sources, or GM's spoke out negatively about the way Dubas handled it. he waited, got the best contract possible, and if he returns to his 60 point form it would be very very team friendly.

care to share why? if you look up the story of Brian Burke being fired by the leafs there are dozens of articles that explain his outrage and disgust with the franchise. He has been dubas' biggest critic, and on any many occasions he has criticized how dubas has handled things. Matthews contract, Nylanders contract, didnt think Dubas was ready and they should have kept Lou or promoted Hunter, said Matthews isn't exciting to watch and doesn't sell tickets, etc.. I can go on and on. He did a miserable job as a leafs GM, the fanbase hated him and the decisions he made, he was critical of the fans, then when he left essentially declared his hatred for the franchise. I don't really know what else there is to say to prove that when it comes to the leafs, his opinions are biased.

We really need to have a talk about Marner here. Marner does not get to pick his comparables. He can ask for whatever he wants. But 9x3 or 11x5 are drunk and grossly overpaid.

Montreal said Aho was worht 8.45/5. Aho agree'd he was worth 8.45/5. Aho was in the same draft as Marner. But he plays center. Basically equal offensively, drives play great, way better than Marner defensively. Best comparable for Marner to date. Also Marner got ZERO offer sheets. None. He has literally no power any more.

Factoring in all of that, not a C, not as good defensively.... 8.25/5 sounds good. 8.8/6, 7-7.5/3....

Also trading Nylander is a terrible idea....

while I agree, I think the $7-8m range for a bridge is fair, and the $8-9m for a longer deal is fair, I was purely stating 11x8 would be the likely fair cost if the leafs want to hold him for basically the best parts of his career. I think I the number starts with 9 and its a 6 year deal. at 6 years he would be a 28 year old UFA, at 8 years he would be 30. that is millions in difference of UFA AAV which made me believe 11 was fair.
