I don't know why either team does this tbh, I think each team likes their guy.

I see lots of AGM where Rust is moved for a 3rd (assuming PIT fans want him moved)

Also Byron is seen in a lot of moves due to MTL's left wing depth, also most times for a third.

I think overall, Rust is the slightly better player so I threw in the pick.

Montreal passes. Byron is an important part of our team. He brings a lot a leadership and most importantly speed. I'm not saying the value is off but trading Byron for another similar guy would not make our team any better, so why trade him?

These players are so similar, why would you bother? I hope Pit doesn't trade Rust, but if they do then surely it would be for D, a young prospect or salary cap relief? You need some reason like that, otherwise you're pretty much just trading Rust for Rust here.

Mhm. I did it more as a change of scenery move.

I can't speak for Pitt fans but I assume those MTL fans who move Byron do so to clear space when they sign Duchene or Karlsson. I don't think that happens but who really knows.

I like Byron and think it would send the wrong message to trade him a few months after signing him to an extension.

Penguins decline. A. Rust is the younger player. B. Penguins don't need another left handed winger. If anything they need more help on the RW. Which is why Rust stays.
