You've overpaid Kapanen with 6m. But the Leafs need cap, and no reason Greenway might be as good Kapanen soon. Maybe Greenway for Kapanen straight up could be a deal.

Too much for Kapanen, Greenway straight up for him is fair IMO. I wouldn't sign him for anything more than 2 years x $3M per.

I think Edmonton declines. Nuge finally had a bit of a breakout season and I think he'll be about 15 points per season better than Zucker every year. Eriksson Ek and Zucker for just Nuge is probably a good start, but I think you'd really have to give up more for him. Not sure we have the pieces that would be worth it for us to get a Nuge deal done anymore.

I see Minnesota fans posting Greenway for Kappy quite a lot. They are both young (Kap is half a year younger), but at this point Kappy has proved more and we know he can play on the PK and PP. Why would we trade him 1 for 1 for Greenway? Is his potential much greater that Toronto ops for gambling on him?

It saves the Leafs maybe 3m in needed cap this season. And since the Leaf need about 7m in net cap saving, this would take them half way there, and still have a competent Kapanenn replacement.

I have complete confidence that Dubas will be able to move Zaitsev and Marleau without causing major damage to the organisation and that would clear $10. Also Greenway is LW. It's hard to judge a players future from NCAA production, his AHL sample size is small, and at a 4th line pace. I can't just go acout the guy. The points aren't telling me he is worth Kapanen.

The ideal Leaf situation as you suggest is to trade Marleau without any cap returned and they will be almost cap compliant. Zaitsev might be a tougher trade without retention or taking money back in a trade. But if those two guys don't get traded then its other players that have to traded for futures....either no NHL cap or players on ELCs. Going to hard to get equal instant productivity back in trade due to cap restraints.

The leafs cap situation isn't as bar as you make it out to be. If everyone signs what they are Projected to you really only need to move a guy like brown. They can pinch pennies by sending waiver free guys down as needed on paper transactions

Now can we get back to the part of the discussion where you all say Greenway is as valuable as Kapanen?

Well we won't know till all the RFAs are signed, but IMO it's closer to 7m that has to go not just 2.1m Brown. And even at that that doesn't improve a shaky defence.

No one ever suggested that Greenway is as "valuable" on the ice right now a Kapanen. But in a trade he might be as valuable if the Leafs are trying to save about 3m in cap. But trades like this happen all the team. Teams trade a first rounder for current NHLer. It's future projection.

Kapanen scores below an average 4th line pace when he isn't playing with one of the top-10 centers in the world though, so there's that.

4 million is still way higher than Kappy is projected to sign for. And I'll believe offersheets the day a GM pulls out his pen-knife and stabs another GM in the back to sign that offersheet.

If Greenway's main value is we don't have to pay him yet rather than his potential to be and exceed Kapanen's ability I don't see why the leafs do the trade, its just kicking the can down the road when they should have room to sign Kapanen who they know is successful.

Amazing that...when used in a defensive role alongside Kadri your offense dips a little. Btw, where are you getting the scoring metrics in a WOWY fashion. Can't for the life of me find a good one that shows player goals by line combination.

Most of the sample sizes are too small. I'm going to set 10 games at roughly 15 minutes as that's roughly how much even strength time he had. So with a 150 minute minmmum, we are left with;

Morgan Rielly
Auston Matthews
Ron Hainsey
Andreas Johnsson
Patrick Marleau
Jake Gardiner
Travis Dermott
Nazem Kadri
Igor Ozhiganov
Nikita Zaitsev

That's in order of Goals/60. His shot metrics don't deviate too much with except for with Igor Ozhiganov who he consistently did horrendous with (go figure), for example his shots/60 was 8.549 on average and deviated by about 1.4 or roughly translated to his icetime, about a +/- a shot a game, less if you ditch Oziganov. The main difference is shot percentage which was 3.77% with Kadri, and 13.58% with Matthews.

Greenway suffers a similar problem except he's shooting a ridiculous 20% with Coyle /Seeler and then a reasonable ~10% with most other guys.
