Here’s the problem. The leafs will be the third best team in the division next year. That’s basically unavoidable. Wait a year. The cap crunch will hit Tampa, and age will catch up with Bergeron, Krejci, and Marchand, 3 of the bruins top 4 scorers. That’s when Toronto’s window will open

If the leafs want to contend right now, I think they should move nylander for a defenceman.

If the leafs are okay waiting 1-2 more years for the Boston's/Tampa's of the atlantic to face some issues in expansion/free agency, I think the only players who should be moved this summer are brown and Zaitsev, theres marleau's contract coming off the books next year which helps the team moving forward.

The only actual NHLer Toronto is sure to get out of all of these moves is Erik Haula, and you're trading two guys for one instead of the other way around, which is what a team with a cap problem has to do.

ok not quite. I think that over the past couple of seasons krug has been the top d man on Boston but I agree that mcavoy is becoming their top d man very quickly and will be as early as next year. He just needs a big year to prove it to me over krug who has been reliably good over the past few years.

I don’t think you’ve watched Krug. Not this year, but the year before, he was their worst d man at 5 on 5. This year he’s stepped it up to a second pair pp specialist, the rest of his career he’s been a 3rd pair guy. Mcavoy is a legit number one

Mcavoy has not proven that he is a true number one yet. Way too early in his career to say that. He will be considered that but has not proven it yet

Ya. He has. He leads a team that’s in the cup final in ice time by a wide margin. His play speaks for itself

nate Schmidt led the golden knights in ice time by a wide margin in the finals last year. Due to one good run is he now a true number one too? Obviously mcavoy has a much stronger upside than Schmidt but to be a true number one you have to be consistent over at least two seasons, and be the best offensive and defensive d man on your team. Is he the top defensemen on some teams, sure. But there are very few true number ones and he isn't one of them yet, until he can prove his consistency and improve on the offensive side of the game, which I am sure he will.

Gotcha. Is Reilly a number one? He’s only really played like this for one year.

He improved this year a ton but he was still a number one last year. He has been doing everything for the leafs on the back end for 2 seasons now.
