Something Different

Description
FIVE DEALS:

1) The Appleton and Perreault deal is ripped from The Athletic

2) Callahan seems a reasonable trade for lifting nearly $6M off a division rival;

3) Reimer is also largely from The Athletic, though theirs didn't foresee the Tampa pick being available. If FLA is fishing for Panarin and Bobrovski, whether they pick 12th or 26th doesn't make much difference;

4) Vancouver is loaded with cap space and could use two middle-six forwards. Meanwhile Juolevi is a high-risk play for the Habs. Juolevi has potential to go either way and there is clear concern he might never make it all the way to the NHL. By adding Sekera, the Habs have bought a little time to let Juolevi mature. The only question is really whether Vancouver thinks it's in a good place in the weakened West or wants to take 2-3 more years to rebuild. Habs could probably get a similar deal(s) from the NYR, PHI, AZ and CGY.

5) Edmonton rids itself of another Chiarelli legacy contract and frees up $2.5M (more if Alzner is sent down) and could get a decent pick if Puljujarvi finds his game in Montreal. Habs gamble that Puljujarvi can click with Kotkeniemi.

Habs would have roughly $10.5M in cap space to give raises to Domi, Mete and Appleton in 2020. In 2021, when Gallagher, Tatar, Danault and Kotkeniemi all come looking for raises, Perrault, Weise, Reimer, Sekera and Petry are all coming off contracts. Assuming Romanov and Brook are ready to roll by then, Habs cap won't be a problem.

Oof, you are gonna be hated for that one...

Forget reimer, forget the Van and EDM trades.

Sekera and Poolparty for Alzner and a 2nd... come on.

Byron and Shaw for a guy you are not sure about?

Alzner saves the Oilers $2.5M a year, nearly $4M if Alzner is in the AHL. That's a boatload of free agent cash to help make McDavid happy now.

I am not sure about Juolevi, but I am sure I can't justify keeping Byron and Shaw on long-term contracts when there's a wealth of talent (Poehling, Suzuki, Ikonen) on the wings coming up in a year. Getting them off the payroll then allow the Callahan and Sekera moves, which are shorter-term in duration.

Why forget Reimer? It's an easy move and offers a modicum of security if Price goes down for any protracted amount of time. And if the Panthers are shooting to be a top team in the next 2-4 years, giving up a 12th pick for a 26th pick is no big deal, assuming it allows them to bid on Panarin and Bobrovski.

OK, so please help me sweeten it. The Oilers want to open up cap space and Sekera seems to be one of the main targets for getting out of town. This deal frees up between $2.5M and $4M in cap room. Forget the Puljujarvi and second rounder for a second (we might never agree on a suitable valuation for Puljujarvi), what's a reasonable compensation to the Habs for freeing up that cap space?

Sekera is actually not that bad. 5.5M is just too much.

Given your sparing words up front, please let me know what you think is a reasonable compensation for taking Sekara off your cap.

Agreed, but he'll likely push Domi and/or Weal out to the wing.

Agreed, that's why I want him. But the Oilers have a sh*tshow on the contract front and are going to have to swallow a bitter pill on a few of these contracts. Giving them Alzner at a discount, who can then be buried, is a reasonable deal.

No. I think it is good trade, but I would not throw in Puljujärvi into the trade, just to get rid of Sekera.

How about Sekera and a 3rd, or a 2nd (if I am not sending enough)for Alzner with 1.5M retained?

Well Sekera is a positive for the oilers imo. If anything they’ll try to get rid of Russell or lucic.

If the Oilers get rid of Lucic, the 8th OA is going with Lucic. Russell gonna be hard to move.

Not necessarily, no. Lucic with 50% retained plus a 2nd to Ottawa. Ottawa then retains 1.5 million of lucic and sends him to another team is one example where the 8th overall doesn’t need to be included. Imo Russell isnt hard to move - the oilers will probably have to retain a 1 million as he’s a serviceable 3rd pairing dman on a slightly overpaid contract.

I hope the Jets don't pay that price to move Perreault, so not worth it to give up Appleton, just keep Perreault.

Hope this is just Athletic clickbait nonsense.

Lucic's contract is toxic waste. Unless Evan Bouchard is part of it, I don't think any team will be willing to take Lucic, even if he's discounted.
