I was looking through old drafts and it jogged my memory about a rumor I read after the 2013 draft. I can’t recall where I read it and I could be misremembering, so this could be complete nonsense. But I thought I read that Tampa was offering Colorado their #3 overall pick in exchange for Matt Duchene, and maybe Erik Johnson too? The intention was that Colorado would take Drouin at #3 and keep he and MacKinnon together in the NHL as Colorado’s future dynamic duo. Again, the memory is pretty clouded so this could be totally off base.
Imagine how that would have changed the Avs. Maybe your top 2 lines were built around MacKinnon-Drouin and O’Reilly-Landeskog.

It would have been nice, because Drouin needs a center like McKinnon to be productive.

never heard this rumour before. Only draft trade rumour that we know of is that Flames offered all their 3rd round picks (6,22,28) in the MacKinnon draft to move up to 1st and Avs turned that down

Avs probably ended up with the best player selected in that 22-28 range anyways with JT Compher who was the 35th pick by the Sabres haha, only guy that stands out is Shea Theodore at 26. Even if they did get the best guys available at those picks. MacK or Monahan, Theodore and Dickinson??? still going Mack

I think they went hard after Drouin at the deadline in 2016, remember hearing a rumor that they thought they had a seal in place that fell through, don’t know what the deal was though
