1st, Bouchard and Bear aren't ready for the NHL, let alone NHL top-4.
2nd, they play a different position than Nurse does.
3rd, the Oilers are a very good team when McDavid is on the ice, they need secondary scoring, not a winger for McDavid.
4th, if the cap space isn't being utilized to improve the team then there's absolutely no point in making an expensive cap dump trade.
Okay I'll bite.
1. My point is that they have a surplus 2-6 defence and I disagree that Bouchard won't be ready to compete for spot next year. I've watched him a lot and he looks like the real deal. Top 4 next year? Not likely, but compete for a spot? Absolutely. By all means, if he's not ready don't rush him but a very promising player nonetheless.
2. Fair. Thought Bouchard was left but I was wrong. Still, Nurse is a valuable trade chip out of your defense and from what I see, is going to max out as a 2-3 defenseman which they have plenty of. EDM's biggest need is speed up front which Ehlers definitely gives them so if it costs Nurse I would 100% take it. Not doing it because you don't want to move a RHD to the left side is foolish, look at Carolina. Too many RHD is a good problem to have.
3. The point was, wouldn't that line be fun to watch. And look at Colorado, Boston etc. Teams stack top lines now, If it works they'll run with it and if its not then they'll split it up. This point is irrelevant and was strange mentioning, look at how many times Draisitl was paired with McDavid for a stretch then split up and then reunited again. Same thing in Boston and Colorado with that top line.
4. If the opportunity presented itself in the offseason to rid yourself of a horrendous contract for the next 4 years when your team is a nonplayoff team but up against the cap why wouldnt you for that price? Why would you rush to use that cap space if the right opportunity to spend it isn't there? Cap flexibility going forward when you've had an opportunity to reevaluate your team and find out what your actual holes are and not expected holes is a great thing to have.
