It would suck, but I can't imagine that the Rangers would make this trade unless they spoke with Fox's agent at some level. Rangers made this trade because Fox wanted to play there.

he can go to the NHL now and they'll still figure out a way for him to finish up his degree around the NHL season. It's relatively commonplace now.

he can finish up during the offseasons if he wants, there has been quite a few NHL players who have done exactly that

Does it really suck for CAR tho? Hamilton is still playing and up 2-0 on the islanders with a chance to go to the ECF while Hanifin and Lindholm have been hitting the links for over a week now. I'd take that trade off any day.

you can't compare who is playing hockey today vs who is cracking Natty Lights and swings clubs. sure Hamilton is still playing hockey but, Calgary is FAR better off from that trade. they have a top line winger AND a top pairing D both signed long term to team friendly deals.

just for arguments sake, imagine what Carolina could have received if they split up Lindholm and Hanifin rather than package them...
it would have been more than Hamilton, a 2nd and a conditional...
