Description
Yup, I traded 4 years of Lucic at $5,000,000 plus a few young pups (but won't be right for the vocal majority; shoulda been 4 first rounders and 4 top-level prospects) for 3 years of 32, 33 and 34 year old Kessel and Letang at $14,000,000.

take Letang and Lucic out of the deal completely and it wouldn't be the worst trade on here(would still be a little lopsided in favor of oilers). But add a net negative on one side and a star player on the other side and it quickly becomes Rutherford blocking all calls coming from Edmonton forever cause they wouldn't be worth talking to ever again.

Unlike your ex-girlfriends, GM's don't block other GM's calls.

Letang comes with a TON of risk at a MASSIVE Cap Hit. He and Kessel are very expensive old players, who have been productive, but Letang is 32 and his best years are far behind him. Hopefully he is able to play at least 60 % of the games he is under contract for over the next 3 years. The history of 32+ yr old dmen with injury concerns is not a good one. Perhaps Rutherford can do better, we've been hearing the Kessel and Letang rumors for years, but where there is smoke, there is fire.

Lucic can be moved by retaining salary, he still has value. He is younger than Reaves, who had a career high this season of 20 pts, Lucic had a career low of 20 pts. Reaves was traded last year for a 1st rounder......

Bringing your A-game to the comments section I see.

Ya figure, two 32 year olds that take up $14,000,000 of Cap with their 3 points between them vs the Isles sits well with the GM? Given his public comments you know something is going to happen now.

Let's see what their value is when they are traded. I bet I am much closer than you think.

Reaves wasnt traded for a 1st, he and a second were traded for a first and an okay prospect that granted has worked out. But realistically he was worth a jump of under 20 in pick order.

That is nowhere near a fair trade for the Jackets. Koskinen is of pretty much zero interest with that contract - and certainly not at the expense of Korpi, who we want to at least try as a starter if Bob leaves. (The other option is Merzlikins, so we're not in a rush to accept goaltenders by trade in any case.)

So you figure hanging on to the 66th best 'tender by save percentage (which should be the measuring stick of a goalie) and giving them full-time starters duties is the way to go..... hmmmm. Koskinen was far from great, but even though he was 44th he still played in 55 games and had a winning record on a terrible team in his first full season as an NHL player. Korpisalo had one of the worst seasons of any regular goaltender in the league in 2018-19, but he played on a really good team. If it is lop-sided it is in Columbus's favour and this is quite clear by all metrics. A percentage point difference of.005 is a huge difference and the gap between Bobrovski and Korpisalo was massive at .016. Based on his results, he isn't worth keeping. This player shouldn't be your "hill to die on". GMs and coaches are all about the "what have you done for me lately" and they may be only too happy to letting him go for a proven starter, and a highly successful international player who is likely going to have a much better season in 2019-20.

This would be a big gamble for Edmonton, but it would be a necessity due to Cap Space restraints and frankly I could have picked about 10 other better targets, but the relationship with Jarmo and Koski is probably a pretty good one, and it would likely be preferred to have Koskinen mentor Korpisalo, but something has to give.

So you, unlike the majority of commenters, think it is too much to give up. I agree with you 100%. I think a GM would go for this deal without adding Marody and Lagesson (who I really wouldn't want to deal anyway). The prizes are Nurse and Yamamoto for Pittsburgh.

BUT the psychology of putting proposals on here, unfortunately, is to try to prevent the negative comments, because of course trying to win the approval of total strangers is the most important thing in life these days apparently. Because it is basically impossible to convince internet tough-guys and know-it-alls that you are right and they are wrong. Amiright?

If a 1st was included in a deal to obtain him, then a team gave up a first for him. That is a big deal and whatever else was included is irrelevant, the point is a team felt this player type was worth giving up a 1st round pick for. This was a 30 year old player who just came off a career year of 7 goals and 13 points. This year as a 30 year old, Lucic tied his career low with 20 points.

The fact is that a team traded their 1st round pick for Ryan Reaves, therefore it is not out of the realm of reality that a GM out there somewhere might also give up a 1st (but with probably 50% salary retained) for Lucic. Stanley Cup Champion and proven leader Lucic offers at $2.5 million at least as much value as Ryan Reaves in the mind of more than one experience NHL GM who values intangibles like character and leadership. This isn't my opinion, it's just a fact.

reaves made less than 50% of what lucic makes, and for less term. The fact is the Lucic is currently by far the worst contract in the entire league. even at 50% retention he isn't worth a whole lot.

Okay by that logic Pittsburgh should sell low on Crosby cause he had a bad series as well lmao. Fact is everyone played horrible except for a few players. Kessel and Letang both had very good regular seasons. The only two pieces with some value coming back are Yamamoto and Nurse lmao. And the fact you’re sending us Lucic too??? Yeah that’s horrible for Pittsburgh aha. Letang won’t be moved. He’s too important on the back end. I love how Letang handled the press conference after the series. He is 100% right. Letang tries to do too much cause he doesn’t have a choice. He’s our only D capable of creating any offense (since Schultz was anchored down by JJ he couldn’t do anything). If Pittsburgh wants to help Letang they’ll significantly improve this D core by cutting the dead weight. Trading Johnson, Trading Maatta, Trading Gubranson (he was very solid for us but not worth 4 million and he’s too slow)

Crosby is not part of this discussion, his value is not in question. Rutherford made comments and that is why I did this. The contracts that bog down the Pens are these along with JJ & EG; agreed.

This is unlikely to happen, and both players have tons of value, but they both come with risk. Most GM's hate risk, like most NHL coaches, which is why there is a greater than 50% chance that we'll never know what it will take to move either player this off-season.

But, arguing is fun.... I guess.

kessel and Letang dont "bog down" the pens at all. Kessel is an 80+ point winger making under 7 million and letang is a #1RHD making 7.25 million. they're both on very good contracts. it is OK to Pay good players who deserve big contracts. however, it is not okay to pay guys like Maatta over 4 million, Hornqvist 5.25 million, bjustaad 4.1 million, rust 3.5 etc... its not that these contracts are "bad", but with an expensive core you need to fill out your depth with great value players.

when pens won the cup back to back, Bonino and Schultz both made under 2 million
rust, sheary, guzental (2017), maatta (2016), dumolin, murray, etc all were on ELC contracts

pens need to find that value again to be contenders. letang and kessel are not the problems. its overpriced depth and the lack of ELC's thats gonna hurt them. now with that being said, kessel trade is a great way to get a young, talented winger on an ELC that can break out (think guzental pre 2017). im open to moving kessel but we need to get value back.

No, we're more likely to start with Merzlikins. Or possibly even retain Bob. Koskinen is not nearly enough of an upgrade to justify the cap hit increase.

(And, incidentally, Korpi's bad outings were taking place around the same time as Bob's. It's almost as though the team as a whole was suffering.)
