No need to do anything drastic... Sabres need a 3C who is physical, and has good two-way play and faceoff stats. Since the core of our team is young, it should be a player 24-26 years old and within .45-.65 points per game.
Players we should be targeting to fill this role:
J.T. Miller
Chris Tierney
Philip Danault
Boone Jenner
Alex Kerfoot
J.T. Compher
If this were to be part of a Risto trade, which I don't believe it should be, RHD they should target to replace him from these teams include:
TBL: Erik Cernak
OTT: Christian Jaros, Jake Bernard-Docker
MTL: Noah Juulson, Cale Fluery, Josh Brook
AVS: Conor Timmons, Nicolas Meloche
CBJ: Not really any...
Trade could look like:
JT. Miller
Erik Cernak
Callahan
for
Risto
Draft pick/Thompson/CJ Smith
Chris Tierney
Jaros/Bernard Docker
Draft pick
for
Risto
Danault
Juulson
for
Risto
draft pick/thompson/cj smith
Kerfoot and Meloche
or
Compher and Timmons
for
Risto
draft pick/Thompson/CJ Smith
Boone Jenner
for
2nd round pick and Asplund/Thompson/McCabe
Why these teams would want Risto:
Lightening: Would totally put them over the top and it saves them over 5 mill in salary to help sign Point
OTT: Have a ton of young, highly drafted centers (Brown, White, Batherson) which makes Tierney replaceable. Risto can replace Ceci if he ends of leaving and can be Chabot's right handed partner
MTL: One of the oldest Defensive cores in the league, Weber is always injured and retirement isn't super far down the road. Could really use a young, proven, puck-moving defenseman
AVS: Tyson Barrie could be on the move in a trade if he doesn't resign. Erik Johnson will fade into a bottem-pairing role as he gets older, leaving Cale Makar and Risto to round out the top 4 on the right side
These trades may not be balanced, it's hypothetical and some more weight would most likely need to be added to the Sabres sides of them, but these are the players we should be targeting to add and replace Risto if we have to. Let me know what you think in the comments, but I'm going to go with the most realistic of them...
A lot of people are going to rip on you because the moment anyone suggests trading Risto people think he's worth a bag of pucks (He's no where near a #1 defender but people seem to overlook the fact that he's just an offensive RHD that averages 40 points a year).
I actually really like your logic on a lot of these trades. Well thought out and articulate. Even though some of the values are off I think you presented a fair argument in many of these trades.
