What to do with this cap space

Description
If this offseason plays out like I think it will, we will bring most of the band back together. I'm totally fine with that; Kronner and Vanek are great tutors for these young players, Howie is still a solid starter and Witter is a crowd favorite who's cheap. The only major deletion I made is buying out Ericsson. I know its the last year of his deal, but his contract is just obscene for his skill level and if our prospects can't beat him out for a spot...we have a problem.

That leaves us with a hefty chunk of cap space and I'm conflicted on what do do with it. We obliviously need D, but I'm not enamored with the free agents that are attainable for this team. There are upgrades to be had, sure, but I don't want us to get tied up in deals that are too expensive and too long for players that aren't good enough. This is how we got into this mess in the first place.

We also have some critical RFAs to sign soon, so there is that to consider as well.

I've been back and forth on this for the past couple weeks, so I'm curious to hear some other perspectives in terms of what to do with this team to set them up for the future.

Depends what happens in the draft. If they get one of Hughes or Kakko it accelerates the rebuild and they could be aggressive in free agency. If they wind with a prospect who will take a year or two they should just be patient and save their space for next year

Who’s the goalie of the future? Bowey needs to play and see what you got? I’m not sure what’s in the 26/27 year old ufa class or if it makes sense to do some bidding or buying, but I would prefer that over a bunch of old vets on short deals, or bottom out and draft your rebuild. I’m undecided also

I wonder if lehner, Hayes, Myers, or any other younger expensive free agents make any sense as far as the rebuild goes

I really like the patience not signing any of the big fish in free agency and keeping the cap for the kids next year. It should also help the team get another top 5 pick next year witch should help the rebuild. The only real difference I would do is put Svechnikov, Rasmussen, Cholowski and Zadina in the minors instead of giving them 4th and 3rd line minutes. I just don't think they are ready, there's no need to rush them.

I agree with this except if you have the ability to add a top 4 defenseman we need to do it. I dont want to overpay drastically for myers or gardiner but id definitely kick the tires on them. Our record in the last 15 years of bringing defenseman along is so bad I dont think we can pass them by. we talk about cholo and hronek like we use to talk about spoul and oulette and smith and kindle before them.

I don't get to watch the Wings as much as I'd like to so I haven't seen those young guys play that much so if they're not ready as you say why are the Wings playing them? Detroit's strength for years was always that they didn't rush prospects and let them marinate in the minors, why would they have strayed from that?
I think there's nothing worse for a young player then low minutes on a 4th line unless they're destined to be a 4th line checker/grinder, just send them to the minors.

How does Detroit need D. If Kronwall comes back which looks likely we will have 6 D that would have to clear waivers, So that limits Cholowski, Hronek and any other D prospects limited to playing only some is hurt. Cholowski and Hronek have proved that they belong in the NHL and if they had to share time again this season they probably won't want to stay in Detroit.

It's a different way to use our cap space and get a decent draft pick out of it.
I don't know if Tampa would like it. but its worth a try.

The problem is we don't have a single #1 D man on the roster. We basically have a bunch of 4s and 5s with Green being a 2 or 3 on a good team. Not saying anyone in the UFA market is a #1, but the blue line is pretty terrible as configured. You know its bad when Danny-freakin-Dekeyser is used as a #1 D man.

Its also worth noting that Kronner has 1 year at best left. Same for Daley. Green is probably 2-3 years left at best. We're gonna need some long term help even with a decent number of prospects.

I don't hate those moves, though I'd argue we're pretty well set at forward

Yeah I normally do as but it's 1yr basically we pay for a 1st or 2nd pick if we don't get at least a 2nd we don't do it. Maybe get an extra pick at the TDL. IT's like a year long investment.

I how are we set at forward I like Abs. but he scored his first goal in like 3 months. A NHL now team should 1 line of grinders we have 2 and before the salary cap it was fine you have 2 lines of "grinders" (A player that works his ass off and does exactly what the coach tells him to do). Since the salary cap teams are forced to bring kids along faster in essence turn a grind line it to a some what experienced skilled line. Most of the league gets it I'm not sure Blashill gets it.

A trade like I mentioned probably won't happen till late if at all because TB will try to get more out of a trade with Callahan. Kuffner or Hirose tear it up in their debuts yeah scrap Callahan. Rassmussen need some time in the AHL to improve his defensive game just like Cholowski doing is now. I think the boat has sailed on Frk, Puempel, Sadowy and Pope.
