Description
So...on Marner....I learned today about what his ASK has been. Not saying this is what he gets...but I had it confirmed (and it's been reported already), that his off season ask was for an 8 year deal @ $9m AAV. Leafs rejected and countered around $7-7.5m....no deal

Then we heard around Christmas that Dubas was meeting with his agent to see where things stood. His new ask? 8yrs $11m AAV. I don't think the leafs even countered with anything.

Other GM's have already approached the subject of offer sheets and let his agent know there will be 4 year deals on the table north around $11.75m...and if the leafs don't meet his price...to sign the offer sheet and let them match it so that he can walk right into free agency.

No comments made on if Marner would actually sign the offer sheet just that teams are ready to F- the leafs if given the chance

Ultimate prediction was that leafs get him signed for 3yrs @ $9.5

Who knows what the numbers on Johnsson and Kapanen will be. I can see Johnsson going to arbitration which is a roll of the dice. But figure we have $5-$6m we need to lop off and backfill

I think the biggest problem was that Dubas and all didn't think that Johnsson would translate his phenominal AHL offense to the NHL in 1 year and that Kapanen would go from 1 goal in 16-17 and 7 goals in 17-18 to a projected 25 goals this season. I think last season these 2 guys were probably penciled in at $1.2 - $1.5 MIL for their next contracts.

I think that's a big part of it. That, and Marner producing at the clip he is too channged probably even his camps projections. But its jot a bad thing to have too many good young players. It just means tgey have some tough decisions to make..

i still believe Nylander was a pre-made setup, which allowed TML to give him money he wanted but with higher pay-check this year cause it was affordable. By holdout he was losing 20k per day, which in two months resulted in 1,2M deficit on his account. Distract that from 10,27M and you get 2M surplus to spread over 6 years on top of 6,9M contract which makes him 6 x 7,2M, so as @palhal said 700k above what he should get based on his previous two seasons production and being compared to Pasternak. In my books not such a tragedy in overpayment. Proly that cost TML the resigning of P.Lindholm at 1,5M next year.

Different story is with Matthews tho, where 5 year contract should net him 10,034M or 11,634M should be 7 years one in hands of a good negotiator.

So my grades for Dubarelli till now would be :

Tavares - signing ..................................................................................................... ( A ) i think that was a sure shot for years but still ok
Nylander - signing................................................................................................... ( B+ ) explained above
Muzzin - trade ........................................................................................................ ( B+ ) we could hunt someone younger with longer term like Manson or Pesce for additional 2x 2nd
Matthews - signing .................................................................................................( C- ) avalanche of overpayment dragged by this one
Gardiner - not trading him at TDL to VAN for Stecher ( just example)............( C ) you dont let ppl like JvR and Gardiner walk

I think this is a pretty fair assessment of things and fair report card so far too. And its a pretty big chunk to deal with in a 1st year.

I kinda thought the Gards would possibly be in play at the deadline. And maybe he was, and part of the reason he didnt get shipped was his back, and thats why he's sitting now. I just hope he's not done for the year.

Why would a non playoff team make a deal for a rental?

Agree with the rest of your reasoning

meh. alot of people had Nylander bewteen Ehlers and Pasta and with inflation from the time of when Pasta signed Willy is pretty close to where people thought at 6.9M. Is he palying like a 6.9M guy right now? Not really, he's getting there but he'll need to double down to justify that bet he placed on himself.

Nylander, since returning to form is playing at a 70 point pace right now, and the eye test along with advanced numbers has suggested he has been playing even better than that. If he was overpaid 3 months ago, he is playing up to the contract now.

Yeah, he's definately looking better, and closer what we've come to expect, but he still only had something like 8 points in the month of February. He has more work to do to quiet the critics.

I like Willy, and I've been a big defender of him on this site. Part of that is because I think he really is that good and is justified as a 6.9M. The other part is that i tire of Babcocks double standard that he has for Nylander... I think a different coach gets a lot more out of him.

Ultimatley, I'd like to see Nylander take on the 3 C duties. He looks great as a C, and if he was good enough to take the MVP honours at the World Cup Tourney playing centre for team Sweden when they won gold, then surely he's good enough to play 3C for Babcock....

The other benefit of this... Bump Kadri to 1 LW with JT and Marner. Solves that gritty LW we've been wanting. It also gives Kadri a role he thrives in playing against the other teams top lines.

...and then throw Hyman down to the third line on his strong side, where he should be... and give him a max of 15 mins a night.. not 20. Give that time to Kadri.
