No he is not an idiot.. I dont really see this trade happening really.. I dont see Toronto giving up Kapanen for short term additions.

Giving up Kap for 1.5 years of Spurgeon does not seem like a great idea. But, it does get Zatsiev out of our hair. The value is sorta there, but I think Kap is too important of a guy to give up. He plays PP, PK, able to move up and down the lineup in 5v5, and brings grit to a team that lacks it.

All the things you said about Kapanen are all the reasons I am willing to trade Spurgeon for him! I think Spurgeon would be re-signable for a 2-4 year deal at about $6million per. Hypothetically, would that work for the Leafs?

There was a news report out a few weeks ago that when teams called with trades involving Kappy Dubas literally said "no chance" sooo unless its a real good deal he's not trading him

IMO Tornto wins this. Spurgeon at 2.69 Mill. They have enough depth to make up for Kapanen moving

I doubt Toronto would trade Kapanen but this really isn't a bad move for them. The Muzzin trade shows that Dubas isn't completely unwilling to sacrifice future pieces to give the Leafs a better shot at winning now. I wish Kapanen played center, then this trade would be perfect for us. I'm not the biggest Zaitsev fan, but he isn't that bad as long as he isn't on the top pairing.

Highly doubt they trade Kapanen but they also Have Jeremy Braco coming up soon so he could replace Kapanen spot and honestly I wouldn’t mind Zaitsev play him with Brodin and they can become a good shutdown Defense paring

That certainly is one of the more interesting deals.....Leafs would be formidable at centre this season. At LHD,. Reilly, Gardiner Dermot. RHD Spurgeon, Muzzin, Hainsey.....Ozzie as the 7th.

Even at RW with Kapanen. Marner, Nylander, Brown, Johnson. LW Marleau, Hyman, Moore, Lindholm. Might be a little weaker with Kapanen and the traded Grundstrom .

Retain 50% for the Staal (for Leafs cap reasons), and I can see it. Bassman, you've been thinking in that ice hut haven't you? Excellent thoughts on the trade.

Staal is a UFA after this year, so unless they are adding more salary on top of this deal, the cap for the remainder of this year should be fine.

I'd say so, this is a pretty fair trade.
