Juices dos and donts for all your Leaf TDL posts

Description
DON'Ts:

1. Place Horton on LTIR...that means the full $3.7m in performance bonuses goes on next year's cap

2. Trade Nylander. They didn't play this cat and mouse game until December just to trade him in February. He also carries a $10.3m cap hit for this year so not many teams can absorb that. Also, his trade value is as low as it's likely ever going to be

3. Trade Marleau. He has a full NMC and a young family he just moved to Toronto

DO's:

1. Do your best to leave $3.7m in cap space so we can pay performance bonuses

2. Trade Horton...if there's a willing taker and the deal makes sense....he's eating $5.3m of cap space on the 2018-19 roster and if you find a willing buyer you can pay off...he would legitimately free up cap space to make a big add this year

That's all....feel free to post your own do's and don't in the thread. I've just seen too many TDL posts that I immediately ignore as soon as I see Horton on LTIR

Don’t- trade rfa’s like Johnsson and kappy for ufa’s like ferland.

-pay to move zaitsev

-Trade gardiner because you think he’s trash

- Trade our ufa’s thinking you can take back the same salary

Do- upgrade the D at a reasonable price

-make trades with teams that will be missing the playoffs.

Don't do trades of non roster players (prospects and picks) for roster players without considering how the team will make room for them (re: who goes on waivers)

That's a good one. I think Gauthier is the only guy on the roster that doesn't need to clear waivers to get sent down. And Moore...which is why he's been bouncing back and forth with every new day-to-day injury.

Lindolm, Kapanen, Dermott and Ozhiganov are the only ones waiver exempt currently with the team. Moore is also waivers exempt but is now back with the mariles.

Here's a "Do" I wish the Leafs would finally do, send Marincin down to the Marlies, I highly doubt any NHL team sees value in him to claim him off waivers.

Actually I thought Marincin has played OK for a guy who gone so long without playing an NHL game. I'd be tempted to play him a 7th Dman in some games and go with 11 forwards.

If taking on more cap in the following year, have plan to a make the team cap compliant.

Understand how term affects cap hit ie less term equals less cap hit...and DON'T PAY MARNER 8 FIGURES...ever.

So don't put Horton on LTIR this year, next, or both? I know to not do it this year, but what about next? Does the bonus penalty apply then?

Next year is fine. I have to imagine he goes on LTIR over the summer.

This year Marner and Matthews are set to earn $850k in bonuses. Matthews is on pace right now to hit an additional $2m in bonuses...so that's $3.7m. Schedule A and B bonuses can be negotiated as part of a draftee's entry level contract....so next year when they are both off their ELC, we don't have any young players on the roster that have big bonuses in their contracts.....and with Marleau's $6.25m coming off the books in 2020-21...the Leafs are able to carry over any performance bonuses earned next year onto that cap. Guys like Liljegren, Bracco, Grundstrom...if they make the team next year...could earn performance bonuses...but I think Liljegren is the highest possible one at $400k....

To summarize...Horton on LTIR this year = even bigger problems for the Leafs' cap next year

Horton on LTIR next year is fine...and pretty much a necessity
