two moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cbjthrowaway</b></div><div>brodie is a left hander. capfriendly arbitrarily lists him as a RD for the same reason it lists blankenburg as a LD – because both guys played their off-side out of necessity.
unlike peeke, he's a guy who they can play in any of the six d-man spots. peeke can't play on the left and can't play on the top pair. he's fighting for the second or third pair RD spot, but the other guys in that equation either have higher upside (boqvist, jiricek), are better right now (blankenburg) or are more expensive/harder to move (gudbranson).
he's a shutdown guy who can also get the puck out of the zone and handle big minutes, so you could either put him with werenski:
werenski - brodie
provorov - severson
bean - blankenburg/gudbranson/jiricek
or let him be a safety blanket for one of the young guys:
werenski - severson
brodie - boqvist/jiricek
provorov - blankenburg/gudbranson
in the roster build above, jiricek stays in the AHL, gudbranson is the 7D, and the jackets have three balanced pairs that can be very effective and all handle 20+ minutes a night if needed.
the short-term cap is fine, and it buys them more cap room in the following two seasons when they'll need it a lot more.</div></div>
Sure Brodie is left handed but has always been a RD. He has only played a hand full of games as LD. He only played LD for Toronto due to injury to a LD and was no where as effective as he is playing RD.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Key word is should be. De Haan has played both sides his entire career, would not play on the right under Rod. Pesce can play on the left, Rod refused to do it even when the only healthy D men on the team were righties. The fact he's left handed means Rod will want him on the left. It makes puck movement and shooting from the point a lot easier and thats what his entire system is built on</div></div>
Brodie is actually a better RD than LD even though he is left shot.

I think they are planning on going 7F and 3D and protecting Kerfoot. That will leave two of Engvall, Spezza and Simmonds as the forwards and Holl and Dermott as the defense exposed based on the current lineup. So most likely Holl or Dermott will be selected.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>I think you’re the only guy that still thinks Dermott can still be a top 4 defenseman. I’m not gonna pretend to fully understand the jfresh chart because I’m not a member of his patreon and haven’t read up on it fully, but is it not saying that his only strength is he’s pretty good defensively for a #7 D, below average offensively, and provides no special teams utility? Seems like a one trick pony you could generally find for league minimum in free agency, especially if you’re a team with the pull that Toronto has. For 1.5mil I’d rather have Hakanpaa for example. Given that they have 3 better LD already, I just really don’t see the need for Dermott at all, especially at this cap hit. It’s minuscule on face value but every penny counts when you’re right up against the cap, seems like they could have found better value for half the price if they were looking for a spare. And if he had an acceptable year on the right side a couple years ago, how come he was passed by Justin Holl, a guy who couldn’t even get into a game a couple years ago? If he can play the right side on the 3rd pair it’s essentially meaningless, he’s not making any sort of impact there, any more than he would on the left side of the 3rd pair or in the press box as the #7.</div></div>
Dermott (age 24) is 5 years younger than Holl (age 29). Holl did not mature into a good defensmen until age 25-26 and Dermott is better than Holl was at age 24. Dermott still can become that 4th D and be as good as Holl is and continue to improve on the right side. He just needs the playing time. This year it look as if Dermott struggled with confidence. Especially at the beginning of the season. I think also they are planning on going 7F and 3D and protecting Kerfoot. That will leave two of Engvall, Spezza and Simmonds as the forwards and Holl and Dermott as the defense exposed based on the current lineup. So most likely Holl or Dermott will be selected.

I don't subscribe to the arsonist/fire fighter analogy of...well at least they traded him. He could have gone to CBJ before the season started.</div></div>
Maybe no other time gave then any offers or even interested and only after seeing the few games they played with Toronto became interested. It may have been the only available step in the door to the NHL

I forgot the chl/nhl agreement. I don't think the leafs want to rush the Kid. He will be sent to the Juniors. The leaf will also enjoy the entry level contract slide given the contracts that they will need to negotiate in the next couple of years. Having an extra year of entry level with Robertson will help absorb Reilly and Anderson contract impact on the team.

I mostly agree with you. I would not sign Clifford and give one of those depth players a chance.
I think Dermott would likely try to go after a 4 year deal at 2+ I believe there are teams out their that would offer 2.5m for a 4 year term in an offer sheet and so I think the leafs will have to offer the 2+ for 3 or 4 years. say 3 years 2.25 m per.
Unless Mikheyev takes off in the playoffs coming back from the injury I think it will be another 1 year show me deal at 1.25-1.5m.
With the above changes you will be able to get a 23rd player on the roster and be under the cap.
Robertson will most likely be with the Marlies.

Leafs Baseline
I posted one very simliar to this yesterday showing 3 more players for depth purposes. Rosen on the D and Robertson and Malgin on the wings. I left out Brooks but he is another that is close to making the team. Anyway there is lots to choose from for those last couple of spots.
I think Dermott is going to get 3 years at 2+ per. He is going to be a good player for years to come. I think the leafs need to offer that or risk losing him via offer sheet from another team or they will need to trade his rights.
I think Mikheyev will sign another 1 year show me deal at 1.2-1.3m. His injury prevented him from showing what he actually can do. Unless he takes off when they come back to finish the season.

Really Nice Team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>firezfurx</b></div><div>Unpopular opinion time:
I honestly think we don't need to add on defence:
Sandin is ready to have a breakout year after a dominant AHL performance last year and a productive call-up. He has also shown he can play right-side and would not be surprised if he ended up with Rielly. Muzzin and Holl are already a great pairing and don't need to be touched. That leaves us with Dermott and Lehtonen who I'm fine with playing together. So basically, we have a solid second pairing, a wildcard bottom pairing with two guys set to explode this year, and a mediocre top pairing.
People often overlook the fact that an elite defencemen like Rielly doesn't need another elite defencemen, they need someone who plays a complimentary game, like Hainsey. People also overlook the fact that Dermott is already a solid 2nd pairing defensemen at the ripe age of 23. He was a year younger then DeMelo was when he was part of the Karlsson trade, and Dermott is significantly better then DeMelo was at that time. It's ridiculous to think people want to ship Dermott of for scraps just to go sign him.</div></div>
I agree. I also think Dermott could work next to Rielly as well. Also Liljegren is not as far off being NHL ready as some think. Lets give these young D some NHL minutes and see what they can really do. If by the trade deadline we need to upgrade then do it then.

Realistic 2020-21 roster
Going with a 21 player roster is tight. I would rather see at least 22 players on the roster. That being said I would personally not sign Galchenyuk and use his 2.1 million towards two players at 1 million or less. Engvall is fully capable of playing the third line and we have kids that can use the opportunity to of NHL minutes to develop on the forth line. Brooks, Korshkov and there is Gauthier (there is a good chance that Goat will be picked up on waivers if sent down)

realistic options for the leafs in the off season
I would not trade for a RD but try to sign a free agent to a reasonable deal. Some of free agents available (that will not be crazy cap so no Alex Pietrangelo) at this point are: Sami Vatenan, Christopher Tanev, Travis Hamonic, Justin Braun, Radko Gudas, Mark Pysyk, Troy Stecher, Ryan Polock, Trevor Van Riemsdyk .
Another option see if Dermott can move to the right side of Reilly. Dermott is still getting better and in my opinion is a very similar player as far as his play as Muzzin. If he can make the move to right side it may just work. Hainsey was a left shot playing RD for most of his career. Then we have Reilly/Dermott, Muzzin/Holl, Sandin/Liljgren (or sign a bottom four RD instead of Lilijgen), Marincin as the 7th. I don't think that will be as bad as everyone thinks.
The whole team still has to mature into playing a better overall defensive game. That comes with experience as they age and play more games. If they need more cap space they trade Kapanen or Johnsson for picks/prospects. Hymen should not be traded - he is to valuable.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bloodykisame</b></div><div>that math would be right if the statement were true/accurate there are not 62 top 2 pairing defencemen in the league. The top 62 D in the league should be considered top 2D. It does not matter how they are allocated between the teams.
