Carolina and Ferland have supposedly not talked contract in a month, and with him being a UFA, he could be a very good TDL acquisition. Justin Williams, UFA, also could substitute in for him, and that would alter the return. With Ferland, he would come and add a phsyical player who can score goals to the Top 6. He's has good size at 6'2'' and can get around the ice. Did have a concussion issue earlier this season that caused him to miss time, but he's still on pace to score 25 goals this year (42 points). In this trade, Carolina gets a good center prospect who can play a top 9 role with room to grow in JFK and a winger prospect with some upside in Cehlarik (who needs a chance in another organization).

Bruins then address their center need by acquiring Schenn from St. Louis with a fair offer. Blues get younger on defense and acquire a solid LHD with term. They also acquire a LW to replace Schenn with who plays defensively responsible and has potential to be a good middle 6 winger. Both deals add some nice physicality to the lineup on top of players who can contribute offensively, offer versatility and solidify the top 9.

Bruins could then go into next season with Schenn as a T6W or re-sign Ferland, depending on the contract.

EDIT:

Made a change to the CAR/BOS deal. Taking out JFK and upgrading pick to a 2nd.

I like the Blues trade. I'm not sold on Ferland.

Not sold on the package going for Ferland, or him as a player? If it is the former, just curious on what you would think gets it done.

I think Ferland would be a nice fit on Boston and that price is more than reasonable for a rental winger. The Schenn trade might be a fair offer based on the way he's playing but I hope that our GM keeps in mind that he doesn't have to trade him (contract not expiring) and he's playing some bad hockey right now so there's a good chance his value would be better if he waits it out. He's only got 9 goals and he's sporting a .965 PDO at 5v5. He and his linemates are in a serious funk but they look like they're starting to pick it up. I'd hate to see him traded for anything less than a promising prospect + or a 1st round pick +. When he finds his game, he's more valuable to us next year than Grz and Heinen IMO.

Was trying to accommodate STL's needs with the deal, and its a package I've seen thrown out previously that seemed fair. I can see why you'd want that kind of return for him. With Jay-Bo, and Gunnarsson both UFA's, Grzelcyk would be an instant replacement if neither is returned. He's small, but he is no doubt a Top 4 quality option in the NHL. Heinen is having a crappy sophomore season, but has been picking it up lately, and has a 47 point season prior to this year. There's upside with the player, but he's no worse than a 3rd line winger able to play special teams if needed, and brings solid defense to a lineup.

Don’t think Blues take that.

Too much for Ferland.

Like the team though.

I'm not a huge fan of the player. Just my opinion.

I think these deals massively hurt the Bruins. First off I think the team barely gets better. Grizz is a huge piece for them. Then it guts them in the future. I think the blues trade is awful value for the Bruins. No thanks to both. Can’t see those deals resulting in beating Tampa

I don’t agree. Blues trade is not awful value. They give up grzelcyk but they already have defensive depth and plenty of LHD prospects, Urho being the cream of the crop and close to being ready. Heinen is replaced by Schenn basically and you give up a 2nd.

How does this gut them for the future when they still keep their top prospects and then some? Lol.... Also, you make moves to improve the team.

I’m going to ignore the Tampa Bay take. I think that’s a stupid way of thinking.

JFK hurts but Cehlarik is a pretty mediocre piece at this point. If you re-sign ferland, I think the deal isn’t that much of an overpayment. Bruins still keep their top two center prospects in Studnicka and Frederic.

2nd and mid level prospect would be the most I’d pay. But I like the idea of it

So Cehlarik + 2nd? I mean... I’d love to get ferland for something like that.

Ya I like that. Think it’s fair for both. After slow start Cehlárik has been tearing it up lately. He needs a place to play.

I’m going to alter the deal to this. Also reports are the CAR wants a 1st + prospect for him. So I could see them settling on this type of offer IF they like Cehlarik. I like this more because Boston doesn't have to use Backes in the top 9. They can stick with JFK and have insurance in Schenn. Brayden can play all over the Top 9.

I'm not a huge fan of either of these players and fail to see the point in adding both of them. I can understand Ferland vs the 2nd and cehlarik, but if you're adding Schenn + another rental I think it's to become better than Tampa and Toronto and I don't personally think this team is better than them. If the Bruins are 3rd in the Atlantic it probably only makes sense to add Ferland into the mix for a cheap package like you did. I'm not a huge fan of Schenn to begin with, but if you add him and Ferland it pretty much means you don't have enough cash to resign Ferland even if Backes is traded and Chara retires. If The cap goes up 3 mil and Backes is traded + Chara retires you have 14M. McAvoy and Carlo should take up atleast 10m, so that leaves 4M for Donato, JFK and Ferland which I don't think is enough as Ferland likely takes up the 4M himself or possibly even more if a team decides to get a little crazy in Free Agency.

Trading Grzelcyk would be so tough that I don’t think Sweeney would do it.
I also don’t see the Hurricanes moving on from Ferland. Sure they haven’t talked in a month but who knows he may just be focusing on the season. I think he’ll stay with CAR but he would be a good fit in Boston.

As for the Schenn trade, I think it’s fair for sure. I’d rather see the Bruins try to add either Zboril/Bjork instead of Grzelcyk. I know Zboril isn’t proven at all but I would think there’s gotta be another option. Grzelcyk plays too good to get traded out of a contending team.
