I understand this site is here to have fun exploring all sorts of scenarios but this is about as likely as Montreal trading Shae Weber for Connor McDavid. Marner would never sign with Montreal.

Hey is he wanted to max out his money before hitting FA at 26 this would be the perfect contract to sign, it screws with the Leafs long and short term. He is able to say this is what I have been offered, match it. Then gives him an advantage with his next contract with having FA as a possibility.

Is that worth losing Kot when the Leafs or some other team pimp the Habs?

I think a 20-30% raise (depending on what the Leafs are offering) would make anyone consider moving from Toronto to anywhere.

Just walk yourself through the optics of all that.

1) Marner knows that essentially means he is out of Toronto
2) Montreal's cap is shot to hell
3) The Leaf fans will hate him for the rest of his life (He is from the area and wouldn't be able to show his face)

There is literally no good that would come from that no matter how it unfolded.

And? He isn't a RFA or an FA yet. You have made it abundantly clear that you enjoy the misery of Leaf fans so I get why you like to read into stuff, sensationalize any perceived flaw with the club and undervalue all of their players so I understand why the fact a guy who is still under contract is absolutely going to sign an offer sheet with a worse club just to stick it to the fan base.

I criticize just as many trades that are bad for Toronto.

There is a persistent belief that Marner being from Toronto means something when it comes to contract negotiations. Yet, at a time when players are signing deals early this guy that everyone says wont play anywhere else and will take less money hasn't signed.

I only bring it up when people mention hometown guy or will never play elsewhere

I can't give you the exact quote but I recall one time Bob McKenzie speaking on the contracts for these guys and there is some weird rule that prevents them from having too much money allocated to far into the future. I am not sure the details but essentially, they had to wait until Nylander signed and then another deadline before they could actually sign Matthews and Marner. From what I have read recently, Dubas is definitely working towards signing both before the deadline so he knows what the cap situation is for next year.

At this point I don't think it matters what Matthews or Marner do for the remainder of the season, they are getting paid big bucks regardless, so even them waiting till after the season doesn't make much sense.

Isn't it kinda dumb to overpay for RFA. Juulsen and Domi expect big raises the following season, and there isn't cap, especially if there are performance bonus carryover.

You overpay the rfa years for the security of buying out ufa years on an 8 years deal. The player is giving up ufa rights

I don't deny it's good money for Marner, but it screws the Habs the following season with cap.
