Here's how the conversation went:
Crosby: "Hey GMJR, do you have a minute?"
Rutherford: "Sure Sid, what's up?"
Crosby: "Hey, my boy JMFJ needs a new contract, I'd like you to sign him."
Rutherford: "I don't know Sid, he's been looking pretty bad out there lately. The Jackets have been using him as a bottom pairing defenseman."
Crosby: "He just needs a change of scenery. No one likes living in Columbus."
Rutherford: "Alright Sid, sure thing. I'll offer him a league minimum contract and give him a shot."
Crosby: "Yea about that, you saw that whole deal with his parents and the bankruptcy situation. He needs a bigger contract than that."
Rutherford: "How much we talking?"
Crosby: "$3¼ million should do it."
Rutherford: "#%*$ Sid, are you trying to get me fired? No way I can make that work."
Crosby: "Look here GMJR, I took a big discount several years ago signing my extension so that the club could go out and sign some quality players so that we could win some Cups, and we did. I don't ask for much, but I'm asking you for this. Get it done."
Rutherford: "Ok Sid, you're the boss."
