Description

So here's the controversial one. The reason why we get nothing back in Kapanen/Zaitsev deal is Zaitsev's contract is such a burden that we need to pay teams to take it off the books. Combining it with Kapanen gives us the room to resign Johnsson and sign Myers. This situation requires Myers to take a slight haircut to come to Toronto, but if he doesn't come, then either sign another player (D or winger) or carry over the cap room to the following offseason and do some real damage there (some great defensemen in that FA class). Don't know if I love this situation, but definitely an idea. Also Matthews and Marner deals are what I think they will be, even if they might seem a tad high to the average leaf fan.

This is absolutely the worst move other than trading mathews for alzner. Zaitsev leads our team in shot blocks and has been very defensively sound, being paired with gardiner isn’t an easy task and has certainly taken a toll on his offensive out put. All that said... he is having a much better year than Myers. Toronto gets robbed in the trade and then to add insult to injury you sign Myers for an extra 2m.

Then you trade the Horton contract for reasons unknown... sorry but this is less than 1 star.

And average middle pair defenceman who is very good in his own end making 4.5 million, isn't a terrible contract. You would never have to give up Kapanen to move that asset. That is just silly.

I'm not a big Zaitsev fan. But it's not worth it to sign Myers for that money. He's inconsistent, he's injury prone, and he's just not anything too special. He hasnt been very good this season. Definitely not worth paying 6.5 million for, and not worth moving those assets to clear the cap space for him

The team just got worse defensively with these deals. You add Myers but subtract Zaitsev, a sound dman in his own zone, Kapanen who is a solid two-way forward + PKer, and Connor Brown who is a good defensive forward that is also valuable on the PK.

i agree but considering Detroits current state of rebuilding I don't think they'd make that trade. Plenty of teams going to the playoffs that would make that trade.
