Rumor is that the league was not thrilled about the Orpik buyout/subsequent lack of UFA offers landing him back in Washington, and has discouraged teams from planning that sort of thing on purpose.
Even if planning out such a sequence were allowed, the above says the Coyotes are paying over 6M in the first year of the buyout, just for a 2nd round pick.
The Avalanche got their goalie of the future (Grubauerwas top ten in the NHL last year in save percentage and gaa among guys with over thirty starts, I believe?) and Orpik for a 2nd. They bought Orpik out for a total of 3.5M over two years. Usually the buyout cost is lower than cap hit. Apparently on the last year of Marleau's contract, it's greater, because he was so old when he signed it, so this probably doesn't work for Arizona.
