A Trouba trade this year

Description
BUF getting the better Defensmen with the 1st being protection on him re-signing. Troub likely would sign in BUF as they're an up and coming team and could be much better in the coming years plus it's close to home for Trouba (DET) and since WPG would allow BUF to talk to Trouba prior to the trade, they'd know how much $ they'd have to look at to re-sign him as well as whether or not they could re-sign him.

WPG does this becuase they're able to replace Trouba on the RHD side of things with a similar aged player who they're banking on the fact that Risto can still improve and was a product of bad coaching/development in BUF and can become just as good. It's a pill to swallow but might be the only RHD they can get. Adding another FIN to the mix might also be a good thing as WPG is loading up on talented Fins.

Trouba being better then Risto is a myth. Both are very good players but the biggest difference is the fact that Trouba has been sheltered by a good team and very good defensive depth in Winnipeg. Risto has been flamed by people (especially analytics) for being bad defensively but let's be honest here, when your 21-24 and already playing the same kind of minutes and matchups as Ryan Suter, Drew Doughty and other top players your not going to be the best defensively. Add to that the fact that Risto has played with McCabe and Gorges just makes it even harder.

Risto is not a 1st pairing defender. Trouba is. @JayBeagleFanAccount @The_Ultimate_Pielord

I'd like to see Morrisey signed for less than $5m and give him a bridge deal for something more like $2.5m for 2 years. This would give Morrisey more time to develop and prove his worth. Trouba traded seems to be a legitimate action plan by the Jets, but giving up a 1st round pick in the process isn't likely part of the plan. As much as Buffalo might consider this trade, I doubt they'll accept it, since Ristolainen could play with Dahlin and create a core duo that the Sabers make the playoffs with in the not-so-distant future.

The other big concern is the cap room you've allowed for attempting to sign players like Kyle Conner, Patrik Laine, Tyler Myers, and Andrew Copp, which isn't a good place for starting the Jets 2019/20 season!

How about you give Risto a legit partner, or even another NHL quality defenceman to play with, or wait till he is in his actual prime years before you determine that?

One guy has played on one of the deepest defensive lineups in the league the other has been by himself on an island playing against top line competition his whole career. Dont forget this is a team sport.

Tyler Myers is allowed to walk and is used as an own rental this year. Kulikov and Perrault both traded at the draft or before next season to allow for Laine and Connor extensions. Worst case Connor is bridged. I'll draw up the 2019 outlook using this trade

Trouba and a 1st for Risto? YIkes, do you hate trouba that much? Risto isnt better than Trouba, so no way they have to toss in a 1st round pick on top of him.

Maybe read before you post....Trouba IS better than Risto said it plain and clear. The 1st given is to assure BUF that Trouba will re-sign given that Risto has 4 years and Trouba only 2 of control.

You dont have to give a 1st to ensure someone resigns there, especially an RFA.

Risto for a Trouba straight up seems fine to me. BUF has a ton of cap next offseason so the cap schedule makes sense.

Risto thinks the D zone is myth.

Both the eye test and analytics show that Risto is horrid in his own zone. His only good side is offense but his awful d outweighs his offensive production.

You can say awful D but can you name another under 25-year-old defenceman who had to play against top competition every night? Ekblad? Didnt work out for him either, yet.

My point is you can say his analytics and eye test are bad in his own zone but Risto has been put in a position of failure his entire career in Buffalo, he has been playing 23+ minutes since he was 21 on a horrible team, with horrible players surrounding him, and without a single coach that has known how to teach defense. Compare that to Trouba who is just now emerging as a top pairing defenceman, has been brought along slowly to top line minutes, learned how to play properly from seasoned veterans and actually has a competent coach.

Switch the player's situations and you would have watched Trouba crumble under the weight of Risto has had to deal with in Buffalo.

You don't have to but in this situation I did because the deal happens either before the season or early (pre Jan 1) when Trouba can't officially agree to a contract extension. BUF doesn't make the deal otherwise.
