If you've got Jack Johnson playing in your top 4, your blue line has big problems.
I'll not jugde him before he plays for us. I agree that his performances in last seasons for Columbus were below average most games. But it's too early for any judgement. Of course I hope he surprises all of us. We'll see...
Wilson looked really good on the first line last season and especially good during the Cup run, if he's able to play the same way he had been the last few months than this deal is maybe a slight overpay, but if he can't replicate that success than this deal could turn out to be really bad. But irregardless Caps are Cup champs so of course they're gonna overpay their core like every other team does (See: Toews, Seabrook, Brown, Hornqvist, etc...)
One good playoff isn't worth this much of an extension. The difference in overpaying the 4 you mentioned is that combined they have 10 Cups. Those players have as many combined Cups as the Caps have series wins in the last decade and that includes this year. Also, everyone of those four players has multiple seasons of over 35 points which is Wilson's career high. It's not even reasonable to use any of those to compare Wilson to. I personally think this is an overpay, but only time will tell. I don't think he has it in him to not be a player who delivers bad hits, spends the majority of his time in the penalty box, etc for an entire season and another long playoff run. But only time will tell. But its just funny to me that you are trying to put a kid with one 35 point season and a Cup in the same convo as guys with long fruitful careers, multiple Cups, Olympic Medals (besides Hornqvist), etc.
