You just gave the leafs a bunch of great draft picks and cap money to shore up their backend to over pay a 60 point guy

You don't know that they will be good picks. If Trotts can get the Isles D sorted then they could be a playoff team.

The problem with offer sheets, is you have to talk the player into signing it. I doubt Nylander, Matthews or Marner would sign a contract to play for the Islanders and risk leaving what is shaping up to be a very strong contender in the foreseeable future.

But also, I could see Toronto matching that offer anyway. Its in the same ballpark as what they are likely looking at anyway, and the picks aren't enough of an incentive to let him go.

I highly doubt the Leafs are going to offer Nylander $8.4. More likely in the $6.5 range for a bridge deal.

Couture just signed 8M per. He gets roughly the same amount of points and is past his prime. Nylander is just entering it. Toronto might not offer him as high as $8.4M, but it would be very understandable for them to match it.

But again, why would Nylander sign with the Islanders instead of staying with the Leafs? Everything about the Leafs is better than the Islanders.

You are missing one massive difference...Nylander is an RFA and Couture would have been a UFA. If The Isles offer Nylander $8.4 and the Leafs offer him $6.5, that is quite the difference in pay. For a young kid taking the money might make sense since you never know what can happen.

People seem to forget that it's not just about throwing money at a player, the player has to agree to the contract before an offer sheet is made. Considering the dismal array of the Islanders lineup at the moment basically beyond Matthew Barzal, I highly doubt William Nylander would agree to such an offer anyway. Clearly, we've seen it's not all about the money. And also, as a reminder, all those 1st round picks are unprotected. I would say there is absolutely no payback, the Islanders are basically a sinking ship.

Too bad Nylander would reject the offer sheet. No way he would want to go to the Islanders, especially without Tavares

Really? Lee has back to back 34+ goal seasons, Bailey has broken out over the last 2 years, Beauvillier has improved year over year, Ho-Sang might actually get to play now that Snow and Weight are gone...That is a solid top 6 if you include Nylander. Ladd and Nelson can be really solid 3rd liners then you have Wahlstrom and Dobson likely next year. This team is by no means a basement dweller. If they can get some decent goaltending and Trotts can get that D's sh*t together then they will be a tough opponent every night.

Pay back would be offer sheeting Matthews. They would obviously match whatever the offer is.

I didn't realize all you Leafs fans were Will Nylander! You guys have ZERO clue what he thinks or would do. Getting an extra $1.9 mil per year is quite the incentive to sign an offer sheet.

Islanders have a good prospect pool. Barzel, Wahlstrom, Dobson,Bellows, Ho-sang. Seems similar to the leafs when they are a wasteland but had good prospects that were up and coming, now they are a solid team. If NYI offered Nylander 8.4 over 6 years i think he signs that deal, no question.

Missing in all of this, Islander's don't own their own 2nd or 3rd round pick. Therefore they can not offer sheet Nylander anyway.

I would say "wait a year and offer sheet Marner while Toronto backs the dump truck to Matthew's door", but Marner wouldn't leave Toronto anyway.

If the Islanders offer sheet Nylander, don't get surprised when other teams offer sheets Barzal.

Islanders can match anything for Barzal and would.

Why would these teams help the Islanders? They just lost Tavares and have replaced it with nothing of note.

IF Edmonton or Detroit hold that pick they know you can't offer sheet for immediate help, thus potentially making the pick higher. It would take more than equal value to persuade a team to help them. And all that and you have to persuade Nylander to go player for a much crappier team.

This is all very very unlikely.

I don't get why Isles fans are so bitter about JT leaving. What would he be staying for other than Barzal? his whole career he never had the line mates to play with, their D core is abysmal and they never got him a goalie who could stop a puck. Garth Snow is the reason for most of this and hes most likely the reason Tavares is gone. Lou can work some magic but i dont think it helped that he only had a month or whatever he had to convince JT to come back to the tire fire Garth left him with. If Islanders fans want someone to be pissed at it's Garth Snow not John Tavares, if anything be thankful you got Lou from the Leafs who almost immediately did what everyone on the Island wanted to do which was get rid of Garth Snow. Adding the Stanley Cup winning coach cant hurt either, at least they know that the future of the Islanders is in good hands.

Also why would Nylander want to go from a young cup contending team to a team that is going to be rebuilding the next 3-4 years
