That would be 4 firsts if calculated correctly with averaging out over five years which is the rule.

No...for an offer sheet from $6,088,981 to $8,118,641, the compensation is a first, a second and a third pick. For 4x first pick, the offer sheet would have to be $10,148,303 and more

First of all an agent and his player have to accept an offer sheet before presenting it. At the present time, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND, would choose to accept one from Montreal?

I'm not sure that Nylander would take an offer sheet to Montreal - it would be interesting if he did.

But I think he may be willing to take an offer sheet from the right team. He's had "trade bait" written on his back now for awhile - and it's only gotten worse since Tavares signed. Nylander is for sure the guy they'll move for D help. If he signs an offer sheet he can at least control where he lands. That has to be tempting. And who knows, maybe he can work a NTC into his offer? He's going to be offered a good paying check this year but still has an excellent chance of being flipped. I'd be a little upset if I were him and deemed so disposable. I might very well look after myself.

I believe the correct irritation value is 4Mx1 year.

At that point Montreal risks a 2nd round pick, but it's more likely Nylander re-signs in Toronto, at a 4M cap hit, costing Montreal nothing, but actually irritating Toronto, by raising their costs this year, and raising the number of RFA deals they have to get done next year.

Toronto would not want to let Nylander go for 4M, so they have to re-sign him, which makes him an RFA again in 2019 when Matthews, Kapanen, and Marner will also be RFAs, and also eligible for similarly piddling offer sheets. Assuming Matthews gets 11M to match Tavares, there is no way Toronto has cap space to pay each of the other three guys 4M, and the risk is only a 2nd to offer them that, so if they haven't all been traded by then, that's when three teams could each cheaply and successfully steal someone, and give back just three second round picks.

If MTL's goal is to steal Nylander, and not just to irritate Toronto, then they should raise that offer to 4Mx2 years. Toronto sees the headache described above, pictures going into the summer of 2009 with 4M of cap space for Nylander, 11M for Matthews, and none for Kapanen or Marner. So they let you have Nylander for a 2nd round pick, at 4M a year. You could up it to 5 years, but then Nylander doesn't accept. Even with Toronto, he stands to make more than 20 over 5 by taking a bridge deal, staying on a good top line, and waiting until the salary cap goes up. By with 8 over 2, and a likely raise in two years, to, say, 6Mx3yrs is 18, he comes out of his twenties fabulously wealthy .

Eli

leafs will probably sign Nylander to 6mx5y this summer so why would he take 4m from the habs? They have plenty of cap space to do it an fit matthews and marner in as well as well as sign all their RFA's Kap, Johnsson etc..

Next year is the big crunch that will take some maneuvering where if they offered marner a offer sheet next year in the range of 10mx 7 then they might be able to cause some big problems. Mirtle over at the Athletic went over this in detail, get a subscription and give it a read.

Also the habs need to focus on getting a center, Nylander is just another winger who played center in Jr.

I'm surprised we're still addressing this....any offer sheet that has a term of 6 or 7 years stills gets averaged over 5 years....it's really just another disincentive to the RFA process...so the AAV for compensation valuation would be 7yrs X 8,118,641 / 5 = 11,366,097 which is 4 first round picks

I think one guy already nailed this but for an offer sheet to work a player has to sign one. Why would Nylander go from a clear cut cup contender, to a team that is completely lost in the wilderness and won't be relevant for a decade? Nylander will be getting over 7 million on an 8 year deal soon, his agent won't even accept calls from the likes of Montreal.

OFFER SHEET RULES

An offer sheet consists of 7 compensation tiers.
Compensation to the receiving club is made up entirely of draft picks.
Compensation is determined by the annual average (AAV) outlined in the offer made by submitting club.
The AAV for an offer sheet, which determines the compensation required, is derived by dividing the total contract value amount by the lesser of:
number of years offered, or five (5) years
The AAV thresholds are readjusted each season, and is based on the average league salary for that season.
An offer sheet cannot be greater than 7 years in length.
