Or he will go to a team that can pay him massive signing bonuses up front cause his agents and financial team understand that the future value of money far out weighs the year to year tax relief from being in the US.

Weird Deal
I think all bonuses have been paid now but i guess this would also speak to deals that pay bonuses next offseason as well.
QQ if a bonus hadn't been paid yet could a team trade for that player with the stipulation that they pay the bonus.
IE, leafs trade for OEL who hasn't been paid his bonus yet and say we will pick that up but you have to retain $1M for the next 7 years?

Nylander in offseason
DeAngelo is not Reilly, hes probably closer to Dermott and hes all offense no defense.
also I don't believe Gorgiev is a 1b, hes a backup .. maybe a good one but hes a #2 on most teams, Id rather see Woll given some time or pick up a back up in the offseason.

lets get these boys on the cap compliant train WOOOOO
hes been injured and he is more a middle six fwd, plays PK and PP and a cheap contract.
what Goryiev ... a back up goaltender capable of what 20-25 games and will be apart of 12-15 wins in that time ??? or does everyone think hes a starting goalie in the making?
its funny that everyone on here blast leafs agms for any trade saying they over value someone on their team and nobody wants their crap and then turn around and say they should take everyones back up or bottom six fwd and pay through the nose.
I don't think Dubas has been fleeced on a trade yet the Ceci trade go the leafs out of 5 years of zaitsev and cleared cap. Kadri wasn't going to do what hes doing in Col playing 3rd line minutes and i don't think that trade turned out the way the leafs wanted but kerfoot could still turn into something and barrie .. well hes good for a 2.75m D man .. hes just not what he was in Col but im not sure who could have predicted that.
i think a 2nd is more that enough for a little proven backup, throw in a roster player and a b prospect and thats an overpay.

A question for Toronto fans
I also think there will be a few goalies like Raatna or griese or Lenher that htey would rather take and there is probably other players off the leafs they would want more depending on who is not protected like kap, johnsson or hyman

Outside the box trade TOR
if JJ was RHD i think this would be pretty good maybe adjustment of the pick and switch out Aberg for anyone in the glut of forward depth for the leafs and it makes sense. Jarry could play 20 games no problem and i think JJ is equivalent to ceci.

Why does no one complain about the Matthew Contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CBJ4CUP</b></div><div>Yes I agree, I just don't understand how Marner is becoming the bad guy in this, when Matthews got exactly what he wanted</div></div>
its not the $ value its the tactics that people don't like, hi agent is threatening offer sheets or playing in Europe rather than keeping things out of the media. Matthews didn't just walk into dubas' office and say give me this, I'm sure it was a long process with lots of conversation and transparent negotiation from both sides. Paul Marner doesn't help things either if the rumours are true about him saying mitch deserves this and that. paul and mitch's agent aren't going to get far by trying to embarrass Dubas and Shanny, its just going to create tensions.

No cap space for Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Willian_Cardoso</b></div><div>Are u ok with 4 offensive players being responsible for almost 50% of Toronto's salary cap? So, you think D and goalie positions are not that important, don't you? That's insane. I can't disagree more with you. Year after year we've been seen that just teams with solid D and great goalie performances wins Cups. Prove me that I'm wrong and I'll change my mind. But I'm pretty sure that you can't.</div></div>
would both Pens wins not count, yes they got good goal tending performances but they weren't high priced guys at the time. also Pits defense was mediocre at best but they won by committee. I don't think you can adequately correlate cap spent to cup wins, not every cup winner spent to the cap, sometimes you get break out performances by players you don't expect (Eller from last year for example) if you spend on a few stars and surround them with some decent complimentary pieces and fill the rest out with ELC's and other small contracts you can win. I'm not saying its ideal to spend a lot on a few but whats the alternative pay everyone 3-4 million ... that team would suck. Also if they get him for a few years the cap will go up and that 50% in 4 guys you speak of will be 35-40% in a couple years. whats your ideal star spend to the rest of the team?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Willian_Cardoso</b></div><div>How much do u think Marner will accept? 9M? Even if he accept "just" 9M, Toronto would still be in a cap hell situation. Just 3 players getting more than 30M and 4 getting almost 40M. That's insane!
Besides, if Leafs offers just 9M, I think there'll be a offer sheet by another team and Leafs will lose him anyway. Toronto should move on from Marner.</div></div>
why is it cap hell having your star players locked up. cap hell only exists when you have players that are not not contributing and taking up disproportionate cap space.
spending to the cap with a productive team is good management and use of resources.

Trading Kadri
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>couple things. First, I agreed that Matthews would make more. All of the contracts I laid out were less than Matthews made, except for the 8 year deal. Second, you can't just say that would be fine for, "whatever term." Term matters. Kind of a lot. It matters even more when you're buying out UFA years. 5 years at 10 for Marner is completely reasonable I think, and it seems like you agree. 8 years for 10 is just not going to cut it.</div></div>

Your statement....trading cap dump Zaitsev for someone of valu, , seems like an impossible trade if he's a not playing to 4.5m contract.</div></div>
I was hoping Hainsley would be 3LD this year, but yes he plays right side which they actually have some upcoming depth in now but all unproven. in terms of getting rid of Zaitsev as a cap dump I should have been more clear as in adding Brown or someone like that and maybe a pick to get a middle of the road defender to play PK/ bottom pair and some possible 2nd pair options.
That being said the leafs aren't in the cap crunch everyone thinks they are that they need to get rid of a Nylander or kadri .. they can trade Brown, Hyman, kap, Johnsson for some value and maybe get rid of Zaitsevs contract in the process.

Trouba can the leafs make it happen with the cap
WPG has 20 mil in cap space right now and they have to sign Laine, Connor, Wheeler and Myers (maybe) next year and need to sign morrisey and Trouba and a few other rfa's this year. I don't think they can take back an asset that will be more than en ELC next year. They will need to get rid someone and with Trouba demanding 7mil they will not be able to sign Lanie and Myers next year without several other moves (Kulikov, Perrault, Little)
I'm using the Standard young player, top prospect and a 1st for a very good player model. That young player could be Kap or Johnsson.

keeping nylander to allow cap hit will allow us to not go into LTIR for 2018/19 and then we can pay bonuses this year instead of carry over to next. thats the hope anyways

They could definitely improve but I don't think they're trash, .1 g/game less than the caps last year. Reilly and Gardiner control possession well. here area few tools you can look at to see who they stack up against. Yes this is advanced stats and yes Gardiner has defensive lapses but he generates a ton of offence. The right side needs help but i think they have quite a few prospects coming up that will get there in 2-3 years.

Offer Sheet just to piss off Toronto
Eli
leafs will probably sign Nylander to 6mx5y this summer so why would he take 4m from the habs? They have plenty of cap space to do it an fit matthews and marner in as well as well as sign all their RFA's Kap, Johnsson etc..
Next year is the big crunch that will take some maneuvering where if they offered marner a offer sheet next year in the range of 10mx 7 then they might be able to cause some big problems. Mirtle over at the Athletic went over this in detail, get a subscription and give it a read.
Also the habs need to focus on getting a center, Nylander is just another winger who played center in Jr.
