Good signing? Maybe... it's a lot of money for a backup, but I guess Edm is hoping he'll push Talbot for a starting job this year, and whoever performs better gets another contract and the other guy is left spinning in the wind. Interesting strategy... if Koskinen turns out to be no better than Al Montoya, that's an awful waste of cap space.

Meh.

About $1M too much for an unproven [nhl] goalie, in my opinion.[/nhl]

On another note, Oiler's prospect Stuart Skinner is wasting the WHL playoffs. His Bronco's team meets Carter Hart's (PHI) Silvertips in the final starting this weekend - can you say goaltending showdown?!

not even the best goalie on his KHL team. I'm going to say this is an overpayment, but the short term still saves this deal

No guarantee he finds success in the NHL. When it first was rumored that he would come back to the US via NYI i figured he would get a 1x1 deal. Of course Chiarelli bid against himself! If none of Pool Party, Aberg, or Rattie is able to cement himself as a top 6 winger then the Oilers are in biiiiig trouble. Nurse, Benning, Strome, Caggiula need new deals.

I recognize this thread is about the contract for a backup goalie, which was a need in EDM - but Montoya is still signed for 18-19. Make it 3.5 million and change that is now committed to the 2G position, with no real assurances that it will improve. Compare EDM's cap# spent on goalies (~7.75m) to some Western conference playoff teams: LA* (Quick/Campbell, 6.475m), MIN* (Dubnyk/Stalock, <5m), or even the Jets, who spent exactly 7.5m on a pupu platter of 3 goalies in 17-18 and had Helly emerge to submit an Allstar season.

How is it possible that a franchise has had a top 10 pick every year from 2009-2016, had a top 5 player in the league for 3 years playing for under 1 million, and only won ONE playoff round??? Simple, they have mismanaged every single decision that has required even a modicum of thought, even the backup goaltending.

*: numbers are for 18-19

they are not gonna keep three goalies up in the NHL. if they keep Montoya they will likely bury his contract in the AHL which wont count toward the cap or will only be a couple hundred thousand i think

Good point, I totally forgot about buried salary. That makes things easier.

Also I think I should say that, if he plays as advertised, Koskinen has potential to be that 1B guy who can give Talbot the break he so desperately needs and deserves.

Who is this guy? Did he come from the KHL??
yes. which you would have figured out if you had a) read this thread, where it was explicity mentioned at least once, or b) clicked on his player page and scrolled down to the bottom, where his stats are listed, courtesy of EliteProspects.

do at least a little bit of research first next time you have a question, especially if, for an experienced CF poster like yourself that knows how the site works, finding the answer to your question should have taken you 20 seconds max.

I'm surprised he went to Edmonton. For a while it seemed like he was coming back to the Islanders.
