Man they even convinced me that the Habs should go after Polak for a 2nd rounder....... That TSN machine is working its magic.
With the trend starting to show that lesser good players are being dealt away for pretty good draft picks, I truly believe that barring an absolute steal, cup contender gm's should just stop trading for players at the deadline. Go with what you have and keep the picks. Eventually you'll get to the point where those picks develop on a regular basis and there isn't a need to shop for players at the deadline. You got your core, you fix the holes with free agents, you call up your most ready youngsters and you only add depth guys that cost you next to nothing or waiver wire pickups.
Picking up players at trade deadline is an old NHL thinking mentality. The game is changing. Picks are worth more then "ok" players at he deadline for rental. There are some cases where it did make a large enough difference but when looking at the situation from far enough, most of those teams probably would of won regardless of those pickups. Once again there a couple cases where it was a major factor. In general, trade deadline deals are the biggest waste of asset management you could have.
Regarding this trade, Doug Wilson got fleeced. I can live with Polak for a 2nd even though in all honesty Polak is not worth a 2nd rounder but Spaling for a 2nd and the remainder of Torres? Come on, that is just horrendous.
