Description
arizona takes 2 mill of staals contract on for a 2nd and 3rd round pick..

edit: most ppl seemed to be confused-- essentially, rangers trade staal to arizona, then arizona trades him back to NYR but arizona retains 2 mill

don't think this has ever happened before, i'm guessing the league would block it but at the same time i don't think there are any specific aspects of the CBA that could deny this from happening.

I think it's completely possible. He has a declining salary plus you're keeping $2m and sending the yotes a couple decent picks for their worries.

I mean, at some point Arizona needs to stop being the league's gargabe dump, but the scenario proposed makes sense.

rangers wouldn't be retaining.. arizona would be.. this has to do more with NMC and if the league would allow rangers to trade staal, then trade for him again with arizona retaining

I totally misread your proposal. You essentially want to trade a 2nd and a 3rd in exchange for $2m of cap space. I'm not sure the league would allow it...but I'm not sure they'd have grounds to stop it either.

Teams/players can't renegotiate existing contracts till one year until the their present deal is done. So, it's not possible. And what's in for Stall? He likes New York his just stays there and collects his 5.7m or his buyout contract.

this is just having arizona take on 2 mill of staals contract. basically:

    rangers trade staal to arizona

arizona trades staal back to NYR while retaining 2 mill.

arizona gets picks, rangers get cap space -- staal agrees to it simply because it allows the rangers to put a better team around him with cap space and he doesn't lose out on any money while staying in new york

The league shot down the initial Brassard to Pittsburgh trade for similar reasons.

He would have to be Brassard'd, as in a third team. Too bad in can't happen! We can't even trade Staal at 1/2 for 3 more risky years. Nobody is taking that gamble unless it's in his last year, and that's an eternity for him.

You do realize Rangers are going through a rebuild right? This team is going to get A LOT worse before it gets any better. They wouldn't of traded McDonagh otherwise. Trading the captain is kinda the 1st big step. Lol
