Gee, Mike you have way too much time on your hands. Instead of the Leafs (or any other team) signing Mrazek or an other RFA, how this suggestion: They sign one or more of the following UFAs, thirty years of age or younger: Enroth, Johnson, Lindback, Rantu, Ramo, Reimer, Scrivens, Stalock, Talbot, Zaloff. Or here is list of NHL goalies that teams who give away just to get outta their contracts : Miller, Bobrovsky, Varlomov, Paveloc, Smith, Lindberg, Bernier, Howard (yes I said Howard).
Don't know if Mrazek wants to sign a 7 year RFA. Detroit can offer him an 8 year deal. So maybe he signs with Detroit....8 years for a total of 36 million. (sorry about those draft choices)

Man that is a terrible deal for the Leafs.... Literally one of the worst I have seen. I hope you are not a Leafs fan. Edit: Wings fan I see... Naturally.

again apparently noone pays attention..this site is all hypothetical shesh get over yourselves for one..secondly, likely no...could it happen yes it could..for one ..it would have to be a dustin penner type contract to make sure wings couldnt match it...especially if wings cap out resigning their own/going after ufa's themselves ...and being the leafs have basically unlimited dollars frownnot talking about salary cap--just business dollars)..

Palhal...im gonna have to start questioning your hockey knowledge soon,if you think ANY TEAM would want or prefer to go after those injury prone, older or unproven scrap heap goalies for most part over a 23 yr old stud who tracks the puck like and has hasek type skill/confidence...then yu must be nuts.....a goalie being the most important position for any team let alone a leafs team that hasnt won a thing in 50 plus years..theyd kill for an elite goalie that young having him for decade plus...and while yea 9M prob wouldnt be necessary to grab him on rfa..but it depends on how capped out wings would be...i think theyd match 7M for him being hes so young..so it would take a crazy ass offer like 9M prob to pry him away and its NOT so crazy being that the salaries ONLY go up every year and the best lundquist etc make 7-8M per...being 23 yrs old..and that talented..yep it sure could happen ...for a team dying to win that badly..which leafs are...

palhal..man you gotta thing for cheap, injury prone, scrap heap goalies..dont you..just becuase theyre cheap doesnt mean theyre good my hockey friend...you really need to set your sights higher as a leafs fan...or are you really that beaten down over the years ..is this what you are reduced too...the lehners, millers, bobrovskys etc..who cant stay on the ice for consecutive games let alone a season or playoff run..cmon man..i expected better from you..but guess your like all the other hockey newbies...hope im wrong man..Game On...you all have now been re-educated haha

Unfortunately there's this thing now called a salary cap. It makes signing goalies to massive contracts, especially when it involves giving up young assets, a really bad idea. Mrazek will get a Braden Holtby-like contract. Nobody in their right mind is paying him 7-8m, while also giving up a top 5 draft pick up in the process. Also, Morgan Rielly will be getting at least $5m a season, and if the Leafs trade JVR for Shattenkirk they'll need to sign him, probably around $7m.

You, my friend, are a moron. A goaltender is important but not 4 first round picks(high first rounders at that). The leafs would go for someone cheaper and that doesn't cost picks like that.

Mike: Here some hockey facts. The Leafs have allowed 5 more goals than the Wings (Wings have played two more games). So maybe goaltending isn't the biggest problem with the Leafs. Graham Sparks will probably be in line for back up duty next year,,,hell he might be the starter. Unfortunately for the Leafs they have the two contracts of Lupul and Bernier that can't be wished away, so there is 9.3m that is with the Leafs next year. Do you really think those two trades you suggested are realistic?
You now have been educated on the Leaf goalie and trade situation. In seven years we can have a more objective discussion of the merits of Mzarek and the contract that should have been.
PS. Your tone and manners better improve.

You're right his team sucks. But don't live in the fantasy land that the Wings are giant killers. From 1955 to 1990 not very good. 1990 to 1995 better. 1995 to 2010 very good. But it the last six years (not counting this season) when the Wings went to the Cup final, the Wings have won 3 play off rounds. They have now just a "middling" team which is light years ahead of Leafs, Columbus and other but a big step behind others.
If winning is everything, hope you enjoyed the period between 1995 and 2010.
You may more about the Wings than I do, and you may know about hockey than I do (although you haven't demonstrated on this site) because it involves writing and putting down thoughts on paper (well you might know what I mean).
Read again, I never "threatened" you. Talk about getting a life.....get out of mother's basement and get cable TV so you can watch more than just the Wings games.

Wow! I just needed to jump in on this, Too much fun! Also a day off work today so all the time in the world! What do we think Mrazek worth and how far can the Red Wings extend themselves. He's currently tied for 3rd in SV% and 8th in GAA. Stats are really good. Also starting to get a few Vezina comments. All signs point to good money, but with all RFAs...it's not just the cap hit, but giving picks as well.

Let's start with $7M and 1st, 2nd, 3rd rounders. (that's a ton for 1 player) Which teams can afford this? I think it comes down to Buffalo, San Jose, & Calgary. Sure Nashville & New Jersey can afford it, but let's face it, they're not getting another goaltender for $7M. What that said...Buffalo & Calgary may bow out immediately if they get the rights to Auston Mathews or Matt Tkachuk. So we limit our possible places to San Jose. Now let's ASSUME they make the offer. For the Record...I wouldn't make this offer if I was any team.

Would the Red Wings let him go? They have $12.5M going to goalies alone and have a cap hit of ~$63M. So Let's assume $74 Cap limit...$2.6M jump. So they have $11M to sign (2) Dman and (3) forwards to a minimum possible roster. This hardly happens so we need to conservatively add (2) ELCs @ $1M a piece. So they have $9 for 5 players. This just depletes any possible roster depth. They'll need to buyout Howard.

With that said. They may have to buy out Howard. The whole point of this is Mrazek really only fits with Detroit. No team is going to give up their 2016 draft for him and even bottom feeder teams have goaltenders making huge money. Can't give a backup goalie $5M-$7M even if Mrazek beats out the current goaltender. Just hope to get him for a bargain otherwise there are huge cap consequences that'll follow.

***EDIT*** San Jose isn't eligible because they don't have their original 1st rounder anymore...To Boston.

Peter Mrazek making more than Holtby, Lundqvist, Price, Quick... I get he's a good net minder prospect, but do you really believe he deserves to be the highest paid goaltender in the league? On an offer sheet?
