Yup, that’s the only lineup (barring trades/demotion of Sandin or Mikheyev/ injuries) that we can run after Hymott return.
So, you gotta think Holl makes the team and is not exposed to waivers.

Versus Bruins Round 1- My Lineup
Kadri - Tavares - Marner was where I began my thoughts on this.
Ultimately though, Hyman is not really a top six forward and I believe each line should have two legit top 6 forwards.
Think of it as...
Kadri - Tavares
Matthews - Marner
Johnsson - Nylander
Those are our top 6 imo. Kapanen is close at 7 so he goes with Willy.
Hyman is a disaster in his own end on his off wing and I believe he needs to be on the right to be most effective. It makes most sense to me to put him with Naz and JT and match them up against the top line. Honestly, the more I think about it the more I believe it is our best chance against the Bruins.
Then let Moore - Matthews - Marner and AJ - WN - KK try to take advantage of mismatches.
Marner has to come off that matchup line imo.
You could possibly go...
Kadri - Tavares - Kapanen
Moore/Ennis/Petan - Matthews - Marner
Johnsson - Nylander - Hyman
Marleau - Goat - Brown
But I don’t find Marleau can spark a line at all anymore and he actually drags them down.
I know it’s not cool, but if I was coach he would start in the press box if he doesn’t up his game between now and the playoffs.

Ideas from the Athletic
I’m surprised most of you panned this idea.
It makes sense on two levels.
You run a lineup with Lindholm and Kapanen as your 10 & 11th forward and add a 7 D whose specialty is predominantly penalty killing.
It provides Babcock the opportunity to either run 3 or 4 C’s or double shift some wingers.
More importantly it lightens the load on Hainsey and Zaitsev on the PK.
Seriously, we can’t run those two into the ground like we did last season... we all saw what the results were of that. And now, we don’t have Polak to help ease the burden.
Fortunately, we have a very good pk’er on the Marlies D who could stand to be very sheltered at 5v5.
You know who it is.
PK pairings.
Hainsey - Zaitsev
Marincin - Dermott

2019-20: Again People... Our Cap Is Not Going To Be An Issue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billius</b></div><div>Yes, it's possible to squeeze through. Although it would be a "Miro-cle" to get an ex KHL player signed for $1M. Try 2 or 2.5 if he's any good. The two swedes are on the low side as well imo, assuming they earned those spots and aren't marginal temp players.
But the biggest headache will be trying to absorb all the ELC bonuses in 2018-19, let alone the huge carryover from this season to 2018.</div></div>
We're not really "squeezing through" imo.
We all know we are going to have to play some of the kids at the expense of expensive veterans.
The narrative that we "can't afford Jake" is ridiculous imo. Jake will go if one of Dermott/Borgman/Rosen make him expendable or we go after a big fish FA Dman who is clearly better than Jake. Even then, the first casualties would most likely be Martin + Marleau. Jake won't be lost because "we couldn't fit him in".
Jake imo will be in the ballpark of the Cam Fowler signing.
But I will make some edits to show what I actually think will happen.

2019-20: Again People... Our Cap Is Not Going To Be An Issue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Victor: It just might be a little more complicated then you indicated. Rosen and Borgman right now get paid 1.75m salary and bonuses for being in the NHL, I doubt if they will settle for 1.5m in their new contracts if they regular NHLers. We'll know in two years, but would be Marleau's motivation to be traded from a possible Cup contender. And who would take his contract? Does Grundstrom resign for so little as a RFA to play 2nd line wing?
You are correct, the Leafs might be able to to have no carryover in bonuses from the 2018/19, which is so important for the Leafs for their 2019/20 signings. Looking forward to 2020/21....no Horton.</div></div>
Grundstrom is still on his ELC at this time. Somehow he disappeared and I had to re-create him.
Rosen and Borgman are unlikely to reach their bonuses in either year. It 's not an easy thing to do as a 5/6 D. But you are right, the chance exists that they could get more. The chance also exists that we only keep one after their ELC's are done and it is important to remember that they are still RFA'S at that point.
The way Marleau's contract is structured suggests strongly to me that this has been discussed with him prior to signing. His only options this summer were two-year contracts, we essentially are giving him three years worth of money to play two. If he maintains a certain level of play I have no doubt we keep him for the third year. Look at our LW without him. However, if his play drops off he becomes an easy contract to move to a team operating under the cap. They get him and an asset from us and they only pay 1.5 real money for a 6.5 million cap hit. He sits the season out without going on LTIR unofficially retired. This has happened before, as a matter of fact we did it with Laich and Michalek. Except we paid their contract full pop. I'm sure Marleau understands this right now. The only real problem that I could see arise is if the Leafs think his play has dropped and Marleau doesn't agree. But I think Marleau signed this contract knowing that he was only playing two years most likely.
Either way, there is 5.5 million extra to play with if you skin Martin who has no NTC.

Hornqvist Trade, JVR and Bozak Trade, McClement Signing
Saw this one earlier today, and as a Leaf fan it is interesting.
It all comes down to whether or not you believe Schultz is the answer on RD.
Losing Bozak hurts us this season... no doubt about that. Even if JVR is the better producer.
I'm just not sure about Schultz tbh.
Interesting proposal anyways. Would probably guarantee the Pens the Cup.
Carrick is worth a 2nd
So JVR + Bozak for Schultz + 2nd...

For PalHal regarding bonuses
We are in a unique situation in regards to bonuses PH, I don't think anybody has ever faced a 5.4 million bonus payout on rookies. We'll probably accrue around 4.5 this year (No Zaitsev bonuses) assuming MNM continue doing what they do and then Nylander's bonuses end after this season and we look at 3.6 in 2018-19.. It's important to point out that Rosen/Borgman/Aaltonen also have 850k bonuses but are unlikely to reach them.
My initial rosters on this were meant to subtly point out to those who post teams with Tavares etc. on them that they always seem to forget about bonus overages and LTIR. By my calculations we are fine keeping the big three and Gardiner long-term as well as most/all of our upcoming RFA'S. And could have some cap left for an FA, how much depends on what we do with Marleau and Martin going into their last season.
I got the reference to Citizen Kane, but I think Leivo's real issue on making this team is his inability to kill penalties. Because we've relied mainly on 4 wingers to pk (Komarov, Hyman, Brown and Soshnikov) he would never supplant one of them even if he was arguably better offensively than some of them. That puts him up against Martin, JVR, Nylander and Marner (and now Marleau). He doesn't beat any of those except Martin and we all know how Babcock feels about Martin. So he doesn't play unless an injury happens to one of those five.
I think he needs to move on, but not as a dump or a sweetener in a Lupul deal. Johnsson (and Grundstrom and Kapanen) is necessary starting next season when we probably need cheap wingers to replace JVR, Bozak, and Komarov moving forward. Those are our "known" future entities on the wing imo. Korshkov and Bracco are wild cards at this point and can't be counted on for anything. So I am reluctant to move any of them unless we are addressing a roster need (RD).

For PalHal regarding bonuses
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Victor: Obviously Horton cannot be traded cannot because his contract is uninsured. I never missed it, despite what you wrote. The rules regarding the cap hit and carryover over procedure, is somewhat convoluted. I noticed you put Horton in the minors for the purposed of your post. OK. so the Leafs will have a carryover of 4..580 next year. Bonuses minus cap space. The question is performance bonuses and I don't think this website illustrated the carryover process properly, OK, I could be wrong. But I'm saying there is a way to themselves or the Lupul and at least some of the performance bonus by trading Lupul if he's on LTIR (that's assuming I am correct about the performance bonus carryover)
Why is it that Columbus and the Isles surrounded a first round each to Vegas to rid themselves of the LTIR contracts of Clarkson and Grabowski? Yes I know there were other pieces to the trade, but they knew the importance of ridding themselves of long term LTIR players. Just maybe, maybe, I am correct in there is some benefit for a team to rid themselves of teams of LTIR. Why did the Flyers and Panthers give sweeteners to Arizona to take long term LTIRs Pronger and Bolland. Yea there are cap benefits by ridding yourselves of LTIRs, otherwise these two teams wouldn't have given Arizona the sweeteners to take those players.
I don't am an obsession with trading away assets. Although I think some Leafs fans have this obsession with Leivo, who is starting his 5th pro season, who is isn't going to be difference maker with this Leaf team considering where he stands on the Leafs depth chart at wing. Same with Johnson.
The obsession of retaining Leivo by some Leaf fans is only matched by the obsession of acquiring a RHD at any cost, and trading Bozak, Komarov and JVR cause "you can't let them walk for nothing."
Remember in "Citizen Kane", Kane tried to train his lounge singer wife to become a opera singer? Despite all his wealth, training and her effort, she just wasn't good enough to be a opera star. Maybe some Leafs fans, should think Leivo in the same light. Despite drafting him, training him , developing him, he just may not be any sort of difference maker winger with the Leafs.</div></div>
I don't care about Leivo, Johnsson you are selling short.
Regardless, my point was that you put Horton on LTIR on your roster. The minute he (or anybody) goes on LTIR (not IR) then all bonuses are carried over to the following year. By doing that you made it seem like we could benefit from trading Lupul more than we actually could. Lupul has only this year left, there is no long-term benefit we gain by trading him... at all. Because, unlike Clarkson (term left on contract) and Grabovsky (possible he could play and therefore not be eligible for LTIR), Lupul doesn't present any issues being on the books that wouldn't be there if he were off the books. The issue really is Horton PH, Lupul is irrelevant. As long as Horton is here, we have issues regarding bonuses and overages. And as you said, Horton can't be moved. To benefit by anything more than 1 million dollars, BOTH Lupul AND Horton would have to be traded this year and have very little come back. Thereby giving us the cap room to absorb 5.4 million in bonuses this season.
I hope this clears it up.
Maybe 1 million in overages is worth losing Leivo and Johnsson to you, but I would suggest you are in the VERY small minority.

Hey PH, we don't really need to worry about bonus overages this year... like at all. We do however, need to think about overages from 18-19 carrying over into 19-20.
There is no need to trade Lupul at all.

I believe he can be moved (rather easily) if necessary if his play dictates it and/or they go big game hunting for a UFA Dman. Take his and Martin's cap hit and add it to approx. 3 million unused cap space for this roster at 23 men/80 million cap and you have approximately 11 million to spend on rfa's and ufa's.
